NADA -vs- Kelley

I am considering buying my son a used car and have looked both at the NADA and Kelley Blue Book. Kelley seems to be a lot more detailed in its questions but the value seems to be a lot lower (when comparing the NADA Average Value and the Kelley 3rd Party Sale value). Does anyone have an opinion on this? Am I missing something??

Thanks!

Which book to use depends on where you live. In California they use the KBB, here is CO it's the NADA. There is also what's known as a black book which I think they use in NC. There is also a Manheim Market Report, my favorite, but that's a dealer only subscription service.

If you're unsure I think the best is to use the NADA loan value. It seems to be the banking industries standard.

Is there really a black book? If so, do you know if there is a web site like there is for NADA and Kelley? I work for a bank and I though the black book was just a generic term for any used car valuation service.

Thanks!

There really is a "Black" book........it shows WHOLESALE prices. The "Blue" books shows RETAIL prices.

edmunds.com seems to slant toward the buyer in any catagory, and actually seems to indicate final selling prices on eBay better than kbb or nada. Just what I've seen, anyway.

Yes and the black book is produced monthly and is zoned by area of the country.

I live in California, and my bank uses Kelley Blue Book for loan purposes.

However, I find that Kelley Blue Book prices are incredibly high. Everything sells for below KBB.

NADA prices are ridiculously high.

The Manheim pricing report is a pricing service for the cars that sell at the auctions throughout the country.
