more patriot act tomfoolery

so my landlord says i have to give em a copy of my passport, drivers license, green card, social security card, current work address and phone number (blood sample, stool sample, DNA sample, library card, subway card, mothers WWF name, blockbuster card, etc ) in compliance with some provision of the patriot act.

anyone know anything about this. any landlord tenant resources y'all can point me at. nothing i have looked at so far says anythign about that.

it seems a litte invasive. just a little you know; like that alien from men in black up my arse invasive. im a tad uncomfortable about it.
cheers

i don't think so but that's their house and you'll have to comply with it or move.. with all this paranoia in the US, it's only the beginning..

good luck

No you don't.

http://www.defendingamerica.org/Articles/patriot-act.htm

Such laws are for the government only and are not enforcable by private individuals. That comes unher the heading of 'Taking the law into your own hands.'

Speaking as a LEGAL alien I can only say that it is completely acceptable for a landlord to ask for a form of ID, and also a SS#. Many companies use the SS# to see if the prospective renter has a good credit rating. For example, we did not have to pay deposits for our utilities thanks to our good credit.
A landlord can not ask for your green card or similar immigration "proof" as far as I know. With so many types and flavours of visas in the US, the landlord will have to retain an immigration lawyer. I also know that an estate agent can not inquire into ones immigration status when buying a house.

When you get a job, you have to furnish proof that you can legally live/work in this country, why would a landlord not be able to ask the same? Or is a SS number now acceptable as such proof?

I'm a landlord. No such requirement exists. Most landlords want enough information to run credit checks, eviction checks and criminal background checks. Current address, previous address, SS# and DOB are usually adequate for these checks.
Sounds to me like your landlord is an ass. Look for another landlord.

He wants to know youare who you say you are....its his property and he takes the risk that you are going to destroy the place , take off and then he finds out you rented under an alias............I know if I was a landlord...and was burned before I would do the same.

the SS# is only for income/tax purposes and i don't give it out otherwise.. even prospective employer has to wait until they hire me to get it... look at ssa.gov for rules...

doesn't matter why. it's his land and he makes the rules.. you either abide or move... he can ask you for anything he wants, it's his right to ask.

On the contrary. If the landlord has more than 4 units and does not live in the building there are a number of anti-discrimination laws that apply.

Anti-discrimination yes.......but he has the right to ask for proof of a tennants ID. A tennant doesn't have a right to anonymity of ID.
