What is the best extended warranty to buy

I have a friend who has a 2001 S600 with only 36k miles and his warranty is coming up on expiring (50k/4 years or whatever comes first) and the 4 years is coming up very soon. He wants to get an extended warranty. what would be the best extended warranty to get and from where? I don't think getting one from Mercedes direct is an option.

Let me know what company would give the best extended warranty on a car like this?

Alon

The best is the one you put the warranty money in the bank, let it sits there and draw interest. If you don't ever use it, you win. If you need it, it's there to use. Either way you win. Why give your money away?

Thats the way I see it too guys, but my friend wants to get an extended warranty, he feels it is money well spent, and if he has to use the warranty once, then it pays for itself as he sees it.

So again, anybody know of any warranty companies that sell extended car warranties?

It's too bad Placo1 (Afshin) is not longer around.

He sold his 500E to a collector and moved to Maine.

I remember he knew quite a bit about aftermarket warranties as he bought one through the internet for his 500E when he bought it. I think it turned out to be a good company as they honored a bunch of claims on his car. The warranty company sure lost a bunch of money on his contract.

If you'd like to contact him, I believe his e-mail address is afshin@hotmail.com

None at all!

I'm lucky, and glad I have said no all these years to 'extended warranties" be it cars, computers, refrigerators, left nostril inhalers!

But one day I'll likely have to pay after my luck runs out!

Paid for two sticky valve bodies in the transmission in the first 50K miles it was in effect after the original warranty expired.

the others I honestly don't remember the names of or I would glady mention them. They were before I bought my saturn 9 years ago. So its been a while.

A) Contact one or 2 local dealers and ask them what warranties and warranty companies they prefer to work with, and B) the warranty company for my 400e was Wynn's. They offered a good initial value, excellent duration (4 years 48,000 miles) excellent, no headache payment for repairs that added up to about 4x the cost of the warranty.

Over my last 4 vehicles, every one of them had substantial repairs, each vehicle's repairs were well in excess of the warranty cost, and all were pain free, except for one repair where the dealer was too lazy to contact the repair company and then the dealer's SA told me that the warranty company refused coverage. I contacted the warranty company directly and was told they (the warranty company) were never contacted by the dealer. The warranty company then wrote me a check for repairs. It was the first and last time I used that dealer.

Given the high cost of vehicle repairs, only the truly benighted would not expect pay enough for repairs over 3-4 years to exceed the cost of any reasonable warranty.....

may depend where you bought it

Folks,
Years ago I bought a 5 yr unlimited mileage warranty on an 86 Isuzu Trooper I was going to use for business (the only SUV at the time approved by my company). While the dealer I bought the warranty from was in business - no problems, every claim paid, every problem fixed. They went under. Every claim from then on was a pain.

During one painful episode - to replace an intake manifold gasket - I had to argue and prove all maintenance was completed according to factory recommendations. They wanted written records. I finally won with the observation there is no maintenance on an intake manifold gasket. The person on the phone admitted they were just a call center for the third party company. This company takes the money and gave the original dealer a kickback - probably a lot. Now when they have to pay out of pocket for additional repairs money got real tight.

Good luck and get the warranty from a company that will hopefully be in business a while.

Anyone find a warranty company that will insure cars starting at over 100K?
Thanks,
Chuck

Its way too late for the MB policy, so check with the dealer if they sell the DC extended warranties or something comparable. It will similar to the MB Starmark and should be easier for you and your dealer to deal with them since they are selling their policies. If your friend decides to try some independant, just verify their Best insurance rating so they won't go belly-up any time soon.

Thanks for the help so far guys.

My friend got the car for a steal, 2001 S600 silver on black, all options, 36k miles for $40k.

The problem I have run into when checking for warranties online was that none of them will warranty an s600. s500 sure, but not the v12.

Alon
