Larry Bible

His Euro 240D in his sig has been at 533k since I started posting on this forum.

Can we get an update? It's all about miles on this site gentlemen and here is an example of the Biblical one holding out on us.

Larry steadfastedly avoids the OD so he'll never see this post. I can tell you though that the mileage on his Euro 240D is unchanged from what he has listed. The car is waiting for Larry to repair whatever it is that shut her down at 533K. I'm sure one of these days Larry will drag her into the shop and get her back up and running.

Bastard!
Ironically, I was just browsing through the forums and noticed your sig and realized I have a '72 280SEL with a 4.5 very close to home - in my grandfather's garage.

Are these really all that rare? I don't have anything to judge weather or not 8,000 built in 2 years or so is that rare.

Should I see about possibly restoring this car with him? I know that he drove it into hte garage one day many years ago when it rode perfectly, prepped it for paint, and has been sitting on hte jacks ever since.

He stopped driving it when the engine rear main seal gave up the ghost.

I read one of his recent posts where he is looking to sell it to a good home. I guess he gave up on restoring it. Anybody up to the challenge?

Larry

Larry is one of the guys on the forum that I'd like most to meet in person some day. Anyone serious about a 240D is well advised to read what he has to say.

I've read a lot of his posts, and I've learned a lot. I even decided to buy a 240D myself. Information that Larry has provided here has been instrumental in helping me make that decision, and continues to help me maintain this car that I really enjoy and that I wouldn't trade for anything.

Probably a hundred guys out there who feel the same way. For every guy who speaks up, there's another hundred who feel the same way.

I love LARRY. (just a figure of speech ) He has helped me SOOO SOOOO many times on these forums. He is a very valuable asset to these forums; heck, he should be paid just to be on here.

I remember not too long ago when someone was messing with him here and he was leaving. I was pretty bummed about that.

I wish Larry was closer...so I could meet the fella

As Mike says, I avoid the Open Discussion forum because I'm too quick to respond to political comments or any other kind of comments for that matter. On a bad day I just can't help myself. This thread was brought to my attention so I am responding.

As Mike also said, the 240D went out of service in 2000 when my son was home from college on spring break and it wouldn't start on a cool morning due to REALLY low compression. It had what I was using for a temporary engine from a parts car. The original engine was rebuilt at 380,000 miles after the rear main gave out and I figured if the engine came out for that it might as well get done right.

At about 515,000 or so that engine lost oil pressure and I put in the engine out of the parts car thinking I would fix the original. It is the one that got tired while my son was driving it.

For many years I drove from 50,000 to 70,000 miles a year and the car served me VERY well for such a need. I now work at home and drive probably 10,000 miles a year or less and most of that requires a pickup.

My latest hobby is taking lots of my time and I am really trying to decide if I want to see the 240D set there and deteriorate or get off my bottom and rebuild as it should be done.

So, the jury is still out.

Thanks for your interest,

"I remember not too long ago when someone was messing with him .."--Kamil

You remember nothing of the sort. You remember Larry CLAIMING someone was messing with him... which was not true.

Larry has freely admitted " I'm too quick to respond to political comments or any other kind of comments for that matter." several times... And that was simply one of those times.

Thanks for your interest,
Larry,

Do you still have the C240 stick shift? What is your impression of that car?

Thanks

He sold it. I actually drove in it once with him. It felt pretty solid to me, but his opinion was that it was not nearly as solid as a W124. The doors closed like a Toyota.

I believe he had some electrical problems, which scared him about owning the car long-term.
