Faulty Fuel Gauge Delays Shuttle Launch

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050714/ap_on_sc/space_shuttle

"CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - NASA scrapped Wednesday's launch of the first shuttle flight in 2 1/2 years because of a fuel gauge that mistakenly read full instead of empty, a frustrating setback to the agency's bid to get back into space after the Columbia tragedy."

Why does the shuttle have a fuel gauge and why would it read empty right before count-down?

What mpg does it get?

Certainly worse than my 124!!

I hope they get the thing fixed and up into space soon. NASA needs a PR lift!! I'd hate to see them sidelined by this.

Maybe they're trying to put a spin on it. In reality all the fuel leaked out and the fuel gauge didn't register!

According to the web it burns

2.2 million pounds of solid fuel which is 71.2% of the boost in the 1st 41 miles of flight so that means it gets

53,658 pounds of fuel to the mile

That doesn't include the L (O2) and the H2

When you think about it . . . it explains why there doesn't seem to be much of a UK or Italian space industry . . . The UK rockets would leak too much Castrol and the Italian rockets, while very stylish, would have problems with the statement "the clock is running"

That's it. It's a ploy. Fuel prices went up this week and they're waiting for it to drop a few cents.

Those shuttles are older than most of our cars! This is 30 year old technology being pushed to its limits, and with all the safeguards in place now, who knows if its actually going to fly again. Every little thing stops the countdown.

If Lucas made refrigerators, we'd have no fresh food.

Coincidence that tiles falling off of the shuttle at launch time is a new problem? I have to question coincidence. Is someone shooting at the shuttle? If so I hope they catch the bastards and make them stand under it at launch.

think about this. there is one interstate running thru central florida, i-4, it is 2 lane and it is one of the most crowded highways in the u.s.. now think about this, everytime there is a launch that highway comes to a halt and people like me that live here cant leave the house for two or three days because your trapped. then they scrub the mission?!?!!? holy crap it makes me wanna move out!! they showed on the local news where people were trapped on i-4 for 11 hours and couldnt get off. they were pissed.... i said only 11 hours? hell i spend that on i-4 to go to orlando and back everyday, a distance of 50 miles friday i spent 16 hours on that stretch of i-4 trapped due to activities at nasa
anyone want to buy a nice house in sunny, overcongested, hurricane prone, overpriced, waaaaaaaaaaaaaay to expensive to insure florida? we have the space shuttle

Pretty good. Anybody want to describe a Polish, French or Spanish rocket?

I wonder why they don't launch them where they land them, in the desert. Doesn't rain much. It's a desert, after all.

In British car circles, Lucas is referred to as "The Prince of Darkness." :-)

Polish rocket ship? At 500 feet it ran out of coal.

French rocket ? Ever seen the Effiel Tower.?

Spanish rocket ? Would be hijacked by bandits. We don need no stinkin' rocket.
