The power of owning a mercedes

I thought that my 82 mercedes was just a old clunker that my dad seldomly drove around till I gave him 3K for it and started driving it around. people show a lot of respect for it and then end up talking down on their car no matter how old. it has options that they wished that were in their car which is usually more then 15 years newer then mine . Plus the perks of getting girls with the huge moonroof, comfortable seats, climate control, etc. I just need to work on the sound system and putting new rims. What is the biggest size you can put on this car without messing up the transmission?

Don't change rims. And especially don't change rim size. Those Mercedes engineers are pretty smart boys and girls. I doubt that you will be able to improve on their design work.

The "boys and girls" in Affalterbach would disagree.

What's "Affalterbach"? I'm sure there are aftermarket wheels that will work just fine. I just like a nice OEM wheel myself, especially on a Mercedes.

Since 1978, Affalterbach has been the home of AMG.

Oh, I suppose they know a thing or two about Mercedes. The only car I ever modified in any substantial way was my wife's 1997 Subaru Impreza. The primary modification was a suspension kit from Prodrive, which is Subaru's version of AMG. Prodrive builds the Subaru factory rally cars for the WRC. I also went on eBay and got some wheels, but they were Subaru WRX wheels, so that hardly counts as a modification. That modified Impreza is one of the nicest cars I have ever driven. So, I guess the moral of the story, for me anyway, is don't modify unless you have the benefit of expert advice about what the modification will do for you.

What am I doing wrong? When people see my 380SL, they say "where did you get that piece of **** ?" Do you think it's the duct tape?

Might be the body color sheepskins and fading gold plated trim/fender accents that are so prevalent on those poor SLs.

Or the tinny sounds that eminate from those pathetic tiny paper speakers that came with the car.

That's so true.

How about those expensive sunvisors. Or the center console that takes a shape of its own. The best part of owning a W107 has to be the complicated soft top mechanism. That must be why few people are seen driving with the top down. I had a 450SL for twelve years. The top went down only once or twice.

Many of the same people that give jealous looks for driving an old Benz don't think twice about spending 20k on a new car.

What is up with that? Strange but true. I get very little street cred in my rig, although old people look fondly at it and bookish females seem to like it, which is OK with me. Its kind of like an old Jag that runs.

Also, if I'm talking cars with someone who knows cars and has been around longer than me, and they tell me they have an AMG this or a Porsche Carerra 2 or a Lambo that, and I say I have an MB turbodiesel, I almost always hear "oh yeah, those cars are tanks, I used to have one....it was great." Kind of cool.

And don't mess with the tinny sounds man, I always be pumpin the base-erebody be checkin me out.
