Concrete screws..........

Anyone have any experience with concrete screws, like tapcon?

Are they removable? Onc, twice? Indefinitely?

I had some storm shutters installed, which sit on an "L" bracket. This "L" bracket is very sharp and sit's about 2.5' up from the ground. This is an obvious safety hazard for little children running around. Adults too.

So I'm thinking that "L" bracket can be removed and re-installed when needed.

The dude installing the shutters says that I'll strip the inside of the hole, another guys says no.

I can always take a grinder and round out the edges, but removing them would be nice too!

What say the handymen of the Open forum?

I've rarely been successful in installing those Tapcon screws. If you don't drive it just perfectly, it strips the hole. And, if you tighten it up just past snug, it strips the hole. You certainly won't be able to remove it and reinstall it without stripping the hole.

Why not use the lead expansion anchors? They work quite well and the screw can be reinstalled.

The brackets are up already. I never thought I'd have a safety issue with the corners of the brackets or I would have done otherwise.

I have had luck with the tapcon's. So I thought that removing the ones in the back by the pool area might be the safest way to go.

If the setting on my cordless drill is set right, I shouldn't strip it.

I may remove one and go ask the home depot guys.

Take them out and modify the bracket.

Try to reinstall them.

If not successful, you can always open up the holes and use the lead anchors.

Find some foam the right size to put over it. For thin sharp things I put water pipe insulating foam over it.

grind the L bracket so it's not sharp.. if you're carefull you can remove and replace the tapcons but they will not last too many ins and outs.. if you strip them you can use bailiing wire in those holes to make the tapcons tight.. you could also use 16 penny nails with wire.. they'll be in there v. tight...

I do not believe they are meant to be used this way.

Also, there are several sizes for tapcons. You could use a larger size if you stip one.
He beat me to it. That's been about my experience. For increased success in using them, get the hole way deeper than the screw length, and pull the bit in and out several times, blowing the dust away each time. Those things are hit and miss half the time. Depends a lot on the concrete I think. The lead anchors are a lot more forgiving.

I'm thinking, the beauty of permanent attachment is so that you don't have to remove it every time.... It's sort of counter productive to having have to reinstall it and remove it every time.
I took out my trusty grinder yesterday and the sharp edges are gone. If a child walks into it now, all they will get is a bruise. Perhaps a better solution will come over time.

In the pool area, I cannot plant anything as there are pavers, no dirt\grass.
