As long as the subject is here, please allow me to ask a sublimely ignorant question. I'll be remodeling my kitchen in the next few months, and plan to hang a small (36" - 42") plasma tv in there. Are these things self-contained, or do they require separate tuners, speakers, etc., which I'll need to figure out how to hide somewhere?

Most plasma panels started out as just displays. Now there are brands that include tuners and speakers. The reason for going ala carte' was to allow the owner to use their own home theatre sound systems and most HT folks didn't use OTA HD sources. That's all changed with the popularity of panels being used in nearly every room of the house.

If your kitchen TV is like mine with Fox News 24/7 Plasma may not be the way to go. LCD maybe much more cost effective and the picture quality is almost as good. The best LCDs are Sharp and Samsung.

I heard a general problem with Plasmas is they loose their brightness over several years.

myth busters . . . the decrease in "luminence" that you cite, is based on non-stop, 24/7 use, so if you include the time you turn the panel OFF, the life of the panel extends to approx. 20 years, by which time there will be "smell-o-vision" and holographic 3D projections.

Well this info came from a review, ZDNet I think, so I give it more credence than myth. But I don't have any hard evidence. It did mention, 3 to 5 years of normal use.

I do know the IBM Plasma terminals (MF 3270 like) did show the problem, although as you mention they were on long hours. But it only took a couple of years before they began to have visual problems. And this was 10 - 12 years ago.

Note I read the review carefully, as I too am considering an upgrade. They did a good compare of LCDs vs Plasma's.
