Accura Commercial Question

Maybe this should be in the tech section but ...

I'm not a mechanic by trade, but used to be able to fix just about anything on cars, these hitech electronics, no thanks.

OK, the Accura RL commercial claims that the outside wheel is "Accelerated" in turns.

Huh, I can see how they can "de"celerate the inner wheel, but accelerate ??

Is this marketing spin (BS), or ???

I saw that too. I think they're talking about torque splitting. When you go around a turn the outer wheel has to go faster than the inner wheel hence the need for a differential. Under heavy cornering you need that power put on the wheel that is loaded. Everyone knows this and most leading manufacturers, MB included have management (ESP?) for traction. I think Acura is making a point that they offer it as well since they're in the AWD market.

That I understand, but they claim to "Accelerate" the outer wheel.

It seems to be clearly a technical mistake. You can't accelerate the outer wheel without accelerating the inner wheel as well.

But, don't be too hard on them. They sure can't say that the outer wheel is biased in favor of additional torque. They would never sell anything.

Remember, even when the customer is an Acura purchaser, consider them a moron, just like every other manufacturer.

Don't be so sure. The official name of the system is SH-AWD (Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive),

I wonder if it's some sort of electronic program to put more power through the drivetrain when in the turns. A real world road test would sort this claim out fast. Acura's description is vague at best but remember the people making the ads aren't auto engineers

When the car senses that it's in a turn there's a shift of torque to the rear axle and application of the inner rear wheel brakes. That will put a torque bias on the outer rear wheel effectively accelerating it. Or is there something I'm missing? It takes a good amount of validation logic to ensure that the outer rear wheel isn't on an oil slick.

They're just trying to say that their AWD system will minimize understeer, to try and make it feel more like a RWD car. They're using a V6-and-AWD powertrain to compete against V8 RWD cars....they need to appeal to that target audience.
