need porta potty info/recommendation
It'll be for kids for trips in a full size van. They don't always give enough notice when exits are 30 miles apart. What features do we need and not need? What are must haves when disposal facilities consist of a toilet at the end of the day?
Thanks, Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |

boys or girls?
All boys need is a mt gallon milk jug. Easy to use and seals good. Not too sure about the girls.

Take 1/2 of the back seat out, cut a hole in the floor, and mount a bathroom stool over the hole. Seriously they do make potty bottles for cars. For the boys it's called a car john and for the girls it's called a car jane.

I've had two Thetfords - one on my current boat, one on my last. Here's a link to their product page.
The first one had the electric flush - worked very well, but I like my current manual one better. There's just less to go wrong with the manual pump...on the electric, I always had visions of running around with my pants down, looking for fresh batteries... Both units worked as advertised, did not smell, and were very easy to maintain and dump. My wife loves them...which alone, is worth the price of admission. |

We use a 5 gallon bucket with a rigged toilet seat @ duck camp......put a garbage bag in it and throw it away @ rest areas.

I bought a Porta Potty at a Coleman dealership that was more compact than the traditional Thetford version but I can't remember the brand name. It also has a swing out tube on the dump tank that results in less splashing when the contents go in the toilet. I'd say keep the tank as small as feasible. Some of the larger port-potti's have tanks that become quite heavy when full if you have to carry them more than a few yards.
One complaint I have about porta-potti's is that they use too much water. I'd like to find a design that doesn't count on the water to flush material into the tank. On the rivers here in the west, you have to carry out all your waste and I use a toilet from Jacks Plastic Welding that doesn't use any water at all. I only add water at the end of the trip to loosen up the solids before dumping.
