I use a beer can with the top cut off, but the ingredients are where it's at. I am still trying different things... best yet was beer, crushed garlic, and a slew of random spices, with black pepper and olive oil rubbed on the skin all over. I grilled it slow (several hours) over low heat and it was the juciest chicken I have ever had. Tasty stuff, that Beer Butt Chicken!

For Presentation

I do the beer can up the butt thang too, but I drink 1/2 the beer first.
I like lemon pepper on the skin. Then I line several chickens on the smoker, prop their legs on each side of the can, take their wings and fasten them behind their neck with a paper clip so they look like they're humping a beer.
We call them perverted chickens and they're always a hit.

I should also note that my new crib has a chicken coup and I'm going to raise my own chickens and maybe a miniture goat for the kids to learn some farm chores.

Dinner is over and its a family hit, its the best chicken I've ever had. First I rubbed her with emerils essence and emptied about a third of my Sam Adams Octoberfest beer stuck the chicken on top and cooked it for 1:15 @ 350.

It gotta be one of the best easy meals there is.

Man, I can't get the bastard to hold still! Scratching and squawking and carrying on. Nevermind getting it on the coals, I can't get the Schlitz bottle far enough up his butt that it stays! How do you do it?
