Good film recommendations?

German Star recently recommended the film Lonesome Dove. It was outstanding. Anyone else have recommendations for less well known but realllllllly good films?

Finding good, but non-mainstrean, productions is analagous to surfing Google. Follow the links. For instance, if Lonesome Dove piqued your interest, check out other Robert Duval projects, like "The Great Santini" but I would probably stay away from "Days of Thunder."

Always been a big fan of Notorious (Hitchcock 1946 - Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains...)

Far from obscure, but another favorite of mine is Rob Roy. A wildly entertaining, relatively obscure film is Stunt Man (Peter O'Toole), although it's just a bit dated (dudes are wearing bell-bottoms) .

If you like Robert Duval and want an excellent portrayal of Southern Pentecostal religion, The Apostle can't be beat.

I tend to think that older movies that have stood the test of time are worthy movies to watch--not ALL old movies are good; some are terrible.

Among the very good movies:
Casablanca
Maltese Falcon
Veritgo

Mad Hot Ballroom shows how crossing the line from child to adult can occur in marvelously engaging ways.
The Fog of War is a reminder that even warmongerers try to salve their conscience in the end.

Thinking of Italian films, I liked the original Swept Away but fell asleep during the Madonna remake.

Stanley Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove" is the definitive cold-war era satire.
