A Rant- Don't you just feel so stupid sometimes?

sometimes I just feel so so stupid compared to these younger kids. my 30 year old brain just isn't the same. they can pick things up quicker where I have to read things 3 or 4 times before it really sinks in. It is just so frustrating! AAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH.

You are not stupid compared to these kids. Your 30 year old brain isn't the same--it's better because of the experience you have in life. Maybe the things you have to read 3 or 4 times aren't that interesting. I bet if you read something that really interests you, you only have to read it once. Now don't be frustrated anymore. No more AAARRRRRGGGGG OK?

Nuthin' more humbing than pursuing a university education. We all learn the reality that there are some really smart kids out there that effortlessly learn in minutes what it takes us a semester to grasp. It also takes a while before we can accept it and wish them well.

Don't jump to conclusions. I teach lots of courses with a wide age range of students. The youngsters immediate leaps of understanding are usually misunderstandings. The reason they only read once is because they think they understand it the first time when they dont. You, on the other hand, being more mature, can recognize your own lack of understanding and keep working until you get it. Almost without a doubt you are learning more.

My favorite older student was a 79 yr old guy I had about 6 yrs ago. Great thinker but about halfway thru the semester he had to quite to get quadruple bypass surgery. I thought I'd never see him again. 4 yrs later he shows up again, back to his old self, and wanting to complete the course. He now wants to take my Scottish Enlightenment class and go to Scotland with us. Give me older students anyday.

Keep your eyes on the prize.... it's a career, not a race. Ask them- maybe they'll share with you a trick for memorizing or 'getting' something. Utilize any tools to get the job done.... hang in there- just a few more months.

get this. so i decide to cool off a little and tackle the window problem in the 350sd. of course, this is just my day.

i unscrew the little black lock at the top of the door in order to remove the panel after removing the handle, etc.

i accidentally closed the door. now, the door 'thinks' it is locked and i can't open it because i can't screw the f^%$ing black lock on again to unlock it. it's just too deep in there.

just shoot me. this day is pure sh^t.

Phospatidyl Serine ....Sp may be a bit off...It isn't cheap, but it will help a bit with repair of some brain cells you forgot you had....Stay away from Ginko Biloba ; it's useless....BUt PS straight, not in a supplement mix will help if you really have some burn out....YOu can google it and read plenty/...

On occasion I refer some poeple to pick up Ginko-viagra. I tell them it helps them to remember what the F they are doing.

Other than that, I tell them plenty of sleep, and take a multi vitamin.

Though I am not familiar with your particular model and you have mentioned window problem, can you get the threaded lock rod up enough with the key to get the knob threaded back on. If the window goes down, it is a one-person job otherwise would require a trusty helper. Just a thought . . .

I have found the window problems, for the most part, to be fun challenges.

Can you find a length of rubber fuel hose with an Inside Diameter a bit smaller than the rod's diameter, ease it down onto the rod, screw it on and the gently pull to unlock the door? Might work with a bit of patience, which is not, by the way, one of my long suits.

A pansy who lived in Khartoum
Took a lesbian up to his room,
And they argued all night
Over who had the right
To do what, and with which, and to whom.

The problem with a University Education is that most only learn what is already known. The entire system builds on itself and does not allow much for creative thinking, the hardest part being to forget what already is known. You need to remind yourself daily to think like a two year old, inquisitive about everything, asking why 10 times, looking for real answers, not afraid to try anything no matter how ridiculous it may seem, etc, etc. The only reason young people learn so much so quick is that they have no other knowledge to prejudice and poison their thoughts.

Read something neat - go to Dilbert's (the comic strip Dilbert) page - Scott Adams just wrote a wacky book, and you can read it for free on line. It is not humorous at all, it is called "God's Debris". It may offend some religious types, but it wakes your brain up. We all need to awaken our brains.

PS - how come, when I type a response, I make all kinds of spelling mistakes, but do not catch them till I actually post? Is there a Freudian explanation?

Fred, though we are certainly veering off topic, I agree with you to a certain extent. I guess my view is certain professors really provide the opportunity to break boundaries. At the same time you are given enough background on what has been tried to allow you to challenge or expand upon it. Sort of like not having to reinvent the wheel.

One issue recently heard by the US Supreme Court deals with the First Amendment. Depending on how they rule, some of the free thinking professors may find themselves w/o protection from creative expression. As the court recently became more conservative, we may find higher education becomes bottle necked plus corked. We can only hope the majority of rulings that relied on the liberal use of the "Pickering" test lead our justices in the right direction. The present administration sent an attorney to speak in favor of silencing government employees protection of free speech while acting as an employee. They will still be able to speak out on matters of public concern but would be at risk of losing their employment position. I think we all know what their future employment picture would look like if that happened.

So, I hope the educational process is allowed to expand the avenues of those seeking higher education not put them into a circular cycle.
Steve
