Check out the refurb prices........crazy. From what I have read the refurbs are mostly cancelled orders or shipments returned from ups and you get whatever software was purchased with the unit. maybe I'll get lucky.

Damn.

Your new powerbook will put my little ibook 12 inch to shame. I just like mac because everythin integrates so seamlessly, and it all works together so flawlessly. The only problem I have is that stuff for the MAC (software, hardware) costs so much. Those are new, and I thought you said that you were going refurb. Oh well, whatever you get is going to be one hell of a computer. I think it is time to upgrade my desktop to a G5.

Geez sorry about the confusion,

Check this out....40% off. Apple refurbs are said to be the best in the biz, some say that they have a lower failure rate than "new" due to the additional testing.

Look at this one its silly. The thing that prompted me to check the refurbs is I clicked the continue shopping tab and it displayed the exact system I was buying for $900 less........gee let me think about it....click...edit cart.....

It's a trade-off, for sure. For example, I don't buy Macs at work because our support infrastructure is totally Winders. we have three or four scientists who refuse to buy PC's and so, they have to figure-out everything with the LAN on their own and buy software from their own budgets rather than distributing the cost over the entire user base. It is worth it to them, but they pay thousands of dollars out of budget that other researchers don't have to pay. Fair? Hell no, but that's the way it is.

In my case, I choose to use PC's and distribute the software costs. Also, the specialized software is simply not available for Macs, no matter the cost. The PC's work and the support locally and from the vendors is great. This adequately addresses our needs.

But at home, with my own money, it's Mac's all the way, no second thoughts. My home priorities are wildly different, so computers come somewhere after dogfood. Looooow priority.

But I still have bitter envy, poisoning my attitude to those not so constrained.........

Cooooool. I had no idea Apple sold refurbished products.

I've been shopping for a Mac mini so I can share files with my iMac G5. I have a wirless network in the house, and my Mac will communicate with my work laptop (running Windows 2000), but will not recognize my home PC (running Windows XP Professional).

I've decided it is finally time to retire my home PC, and replace it with a Mac Mini.

Refurbished is the way to go.

I was prepared to buy one right now, but they don't have one listed right now with the options I'm looking for, but I'm keeping my eyes peeled.

I googled refurbs and almost all of the posters say that the refurbs are better than a "new" unit.

What is the network problem? All I did is click on the network icon in finder and go through the menu and log in.

Oooooh jeez, it was about a year ago when I spent the better part of a Saturday trying to get it to work. I even spent 30 - 40 minutes with an Apple tech (using my AppleCare), and they told me the problem was with Windooooze.

I had my brother, who is a computer guy, come over on the following Sunday to give it his best shot, and we could get the file sharing and printer sharing to work with the iMac G5 and the Windows 2000 laptop, but couldn't with the XP Pro pc. The Windows XP machine and the laptop would recognize each other also.

I use XP pro, it does sound like an authentication problem, if the mac will talk to the 2000 machine and vice versa then the problem resides in the xp box. Winders has soooo many redundant hidden crap its unreal...and they need it.

Make sure you have the XP firewall turned off that does some whacky stuff.

Yeah, the first thing my brother did was make sure the XP firewall was turned off, and it was (by accident, I guess).

I had been using the Zone Alarm firewall, which was off.

In any event, my long-suffering desktop PC will soon be retired, so I will be 100% windoooze free at the house in short order.

Not so fast, The....Dude.

Just because it has a Puntium doesn't make it software compatible.

Don't buy the new computer until the software vendor you use promises file compatibility and minimum diff between functionaility.

Been there. done that. Have the open wounds.
