The Americam Community Survey

Came in today's mail; was politely warned by the US Department of Commerce about a week ago (again by mail) to expect it. Looks like a mid-decade census with 21 pages of questions. The delivering envelope says:"YOUR RESPONSE IS REQUIRED BY LAW". Inital response is to toss it out since I don't really care to give info or my time to any solicitors, including the federal government.
regards,
Mark

It's just a census survey

Chosen at random it's legit if it came from the census dept of commerce. It in theory is IS required by law that you provide answers. As a farm owner, I get these all the time from the Dept of Agriculture. They will dog you forever if you don't send it back, letters, telephones, visit in person, etc

It's a relatively benign collection of data for statistical purposes. No one that I'm aware of is individually identified. The governments big brother features are far more overrated than fellow paranoid travelers would have us believe. As a many decade systems analyst, IT person, they are just not that competent. Whatever God you believe in help us if they ever do get that competent (we'll need all the help we can get).

I send in the farm census alright but they get NO info out of me. I take a marking pen and write in big letters across the page Private Information. The farm census idiots called me once and asked me how much my wheat income was and I told them to go to the IRS to find out.

I receive ocassional queries about rental properties, income, how many people live in a certain dwelling etc.

I just take a sharpie and give the most moronic,hare-brained replies generally unrelated to the questions, not a difficult task as those who know me will avow

Why are people so against the census? Is it because they feel like big brother is looking too much over their shoulder? I was about 12 when the last one was taken and even I remember what a negative reaction I heard from those around me. Maybe I just don't get it.

When you are older you will understand what intrusiveness is all about,as well as the grasping, acquisitive nature of the government.

Fill it out and avoid complicating your life with factual responses, thereby killing two birds with one pencil. I didn't know you were a Samoan-Finn homosexual grandfather polygamist dope dealing communist that owns a major cattle ranch that produces oil and is used as a sanctuary for rare African game animals.

Just as an example of where you could go if your heart was sinister and mind, devious.

Another way to look at is is that these data are used by Congress and the Executive to craft legislation. To make good laws (it actually does happen), they need high quality data. It is a civic duty, like jury duty.

Your choice.

I look at it another way: The US constitution provides the authority for them to count noses for the purpose of dividing up representatives. Four noses in my house. That's all they get. They want the authority to get any more information, they know the procedure to amend the rule book.

Or you can keep it till some Gov't official calls or shows up. Now you know it's genuine. Then fill in whatever you like without giving out the farm.

That might not be a good idea on the American Community Survey. Read on:

...the survey is not voluntary. Answering the questions is not a polite request from the Census Bureau. You are legally obligated to answer. If you refuse, the fines are staggering. For every question not answered, there is a $100 fine. And for every intentionally false response to a question, the fine is $500. Therefore, if a person representing a two-person household refused to fill out any questions or simply answered nonsensically, the total fines could range from upwards of $10,000 and $50,000 for noncompliance.
