BMW Seat back ratchet slipped, now cocked. Help?

Sorry this is a BMW Question but the BMW sites don't have the quality of responses that this site has and lots of the techs work on both.

I was leaning back into the right corner of my seat, trying to get cash out of my pocket and I heard a ratchet slip. Now the right side of the seat is further back than the left. I can see the ratchet under the seat and can see it is out of time with the other.

Does anyone know how to reset the seat back?

i think

you will find that there is a hinge on both sides. maybe a ratchet too. and a pipe that connects the two sides. i think you can unbolt one side and the ratchets will equalize.

i dont know for sure but i bet this will work. i think most of the seat backs are pretty similar in construction.

Actually Bimmer sites have more DIY info. There is a lot of "common" failures which occurred in a consistent way (can we say BMW design features?). Try this for the twisted seat back repair:

Thanks for the help!

I guess I don't know my BMW sites well enough. Thanks for the help and I will get to this repair as soon as I can because it's fairly uncomfortable to drive it this way.

Is this on an E34 (1989-early '90s) 5 series? One of the drive cables slipped.

Here's a good BMW shop forum: http://www.bimmer.info/forum/

Search their archives and you'll have ample information about this repair.
