I'm looking for a pair of dress shoes to wear with a suit. One Store I went to told me that the more square front was the way to go. Another store I went to told me to go with the more traditional pointed type of toe. With little experience in professional dress, I'm at a loss as to what I should do. I will probably use them in a job interview in the near future. Thanks for any information.

Men's fashion tends to be much more staid and stable than womens, hence we get a bit more mileage out of fewer pieces. First, they have to fit and be comfortable. If these will be your primary dress shoe, then black leather with little or no "trim" such as buckles or metal if it's a slip on, will serve. I've always perfered a lace up shoe for formal wear, but if you're going to wear these on business trips, lace ups are a pain at the airport.

Rockport Dressport are the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. They are light and flexible. With these you can stand and walk all day. Compare them to others when you go try.

I don't know if its in fashion but I like a nice understated black dress shoe. I don't like the square front style.

I have a set of Rockport top siders that are extremly comfortable. I wear them everyday almost because I like them so much! Much better then Sperry. I checked out their dress shoes and they seemed nice, as well.


Depending on your budget you can't go wrong if you go to a real high end store and have one of the shoppers pick out a popular style that works for you. Just be ready to spend $500 on shoes.

GO with the rockports they are good comfortable shoes and will last a while. I know this because i work at a high class hotel and have to dress for work. I don't care for the square toe . I tend to go for a not to flashy style. DOn't want too much attention to your feet. But rockports are good.

I think the square toe'd shoes are a fashion trend that has come and gone. Or should be gone.

Go with a simple "pointy type shoe", either plain, with a cap toe, or wing tip toe.

I'd also avoid slip-ons.

Ok, here's a different point of view. You are going on job interviews in the near future. You don't say what type of job you are seeking. If you have a choice between over-dressing and under-dressing error on the side of over-dressing. I have interviewed literally 100's of applicants for jobs from clerical to high end middle managers. Trust me clothes make a difference.

If I were you I would ignore all this advice about buying Rockports because they are comfortable. They make you look average at best. Buy a nice suit, dark in color, like navy with pinstripes. White shirt only. Navy or black socks. Traditional tie. Pay at least $50 - $75 for the tie. Ask someone in the clothing store to show you how to tie it correctly. Get yourself a nice pair of shoes. Allen Edmunds cap toe, black, $300. First thing I always looked at on guys was their shoes. Shined? Worn? The first 5 minutes is critical.

You will all of a sudden feel more confident. Most of the competition will probably dress in error.

So cost be damned. Charge it. Best money you will ever spend and the shoes will last literally for 20 years.

Ah I missed the interview part. Indeed you should dress for success and Rockports don't match the looks of premium brand shoes. It's especially true if your job will be dealing directly with customers or clients. It's less important if you're a computer nerd or other 'back office' professional. My workplace is a prime example where highwater pants and wrinkled shirts are de rigeur. Those people get hired for their skills rather than their style.
