1/4 inch auto fuel line OK for propane?

Have a propane grill hose that is leaking, it is the barbule/crimp type and the rubber is all hard - it is leaking around one of the crimps.

I have bought the same size hose in auto fuel (gasoline) line from Autozone along with some small hose clamps I plan on using.

Question - will the hose be OK? Will it contain the propane, or do I need to buy specialized propane hose?

I looked at the old hose, and some markings indicate liquid petroleum, CGA (whatever that means), and 1 psi. The gasoline fuel hose is good for 50 psi. And isn't gasoline more volatile than LP or propane? So why is a "special" hose used for the propane? Is it really necessary?

After the regulator, the line pressure should be pretty low, not any higher than a pressurized auto fuel line, so I would think that hose should be ok.

Considering the ramifications if the propane attacks the replacement hose, I would only go with the real thing. It's one of those situations where saving a few bucks could cost thousands. Not to mention what your insurance company might say if there were to be an accident.

Excellent post, Wes, that's exactly what I'm getting at. Does anyone know if propane will attack a regular gasoline fuel hose?

Here is " The Scoop " from a certified LPG fitter for 37 years. ( me ).
Propane Low Pressure hoses must be of neoprene material.
The " sticky " part are the ends.
Factory-crimped assemblies must be used.
Hose clamps are not acceptable.
Fuel pressure after the regulator is 11 " w.c. ( water column ), which equals less than 1 p.s.i..
Having said all that, a new certified hose assembly should set you back about $ 10.00 at your local propane supplier, Home Depot, any Hardware store, etc.

CGA - compressed gas association

Could be some issues with molecule size. I think I remember that a plastic garbage bag won't hold natural gas. - don't ask

Damn! No wonder I couldn't toss out my used gas at the curb!
