how are your cars insured

all my friends have low insurance for cars nicer than mine.. well.. newer .. nothing is nicer than a benz.. but back to the subject. i have a friend paying 90$ a month for a jeep grand cherokee i belive its a 96. now how could that be she is 17 it should be near 200$ like how i was getting screwed. then my mom thought for second and rembered when she was starting to drive her parents just added her car to the insurance plan and not her. so it was insured through her parents and not her. she could drive it since she had a license but if she wrecked it as her fault she was screwed and would be grounded til she was 40.

now is that what you do with your kids cars? my 300D added onto the insurance is 52$ a month for full coverage through my parents and its 250$ a month with me on the insurance plan with just my permit! when i get my license it could go up to 400$. which i cant afford. is it right to do that? i know if i cause an accident not only am i screwed and grounded til im 43 but i would also lose my baby. dont bash me please i need to learn but not through the wallet.

No baby might not be a bad thing.

Seriously, here in Texas a juvenile driver without any driving record can go onto their parents policy without getting rated. But, have a wreck (regardless of fault) and you'll get rated, maybe even your parents too. If your folks have a halfway decent insurance agent with a real company like Farmers or State Farm and are also carrying their homeowners with them, contact the agent for the straight skinny (this is part of what their commissions are for). If your folks auto coverage is written by Progressive, you're probably hosed from the beginning and will have start your own policy and pay out the you-know-what.

Is your Dad military or ex-military? If so, check into USAA.

Here if you are the primary driver it must be insured in your name. My 300 costs around $1200 a year for my insurance. Also you don't need to be reported to the insurance company under permit driving.

Is that cost for full coverage or liability only? I only put liability on my vehicles (SWMBO has her own policy and has full coverage on her 300D) because a year's worth of full coverage will practically buy one of these cars. Silly to spend that $$$.

That doesn't seem right. If you had a early '60 model beater truck on your farm, would they make you carry full coverage? I think not.

Someone is getting screwed by Progressive.

There are several different levels of insurance.

Example:

Your insurance should cover the following at a bare mininmum
Bodily Injury
Property Damage
Uninsured Motorist
-Those are reffered to as "Public Liability"
----It will BE almost nothing to insure your car with these options. eHowever, with these options, you do not recieve money for the loss of your vehicle, UNLESS someone else caused the damage. If you smash your car, or it gets stolen, its on you to produce another car.

Now with Full coverage you should have the following:
Bodily Injury
Property Damage
Uninsured Motorist
Comprehensive
Collision
-This is full coverage, and will definitely cost you more than just public liability.

Now, the big guns
We have this on all of the cars
Bodily Injury
Property Damage
Uninsured Motorist
Comprehensive
Collision
Towing
Loss of Use
$1000 of Addtl. Equipment
OEM Parts ONLY
Glass
-This will cost a little more than the step before, but the car is covered for anything. Basically with this, we have coverage for theft/accident, Towing in the event something happens, Loss of use (We get paid for the amount of days the car is in the shop getting fixed), $1000 for any equipment (stereos, computer, etc.), OEM parts when she gets into an accident, and we have to pay a deductible of $25 to get the windscreen replaced if she gets a chip or crack.

You will pay more for the insurance closer to the bottom. You can get public liability for less than 500$ a year if you shop around. We carry the bottom with the most features on all of the car (because I get employee discount w/ Farmers), so it all works out in the end.

If you have any kind of assets to protect, "state minimum" liability limits are insufficient. Don't risk your home, farm, land or fleet of cars by not carrying enough to avoid lawsuit in the event of a bad accident.

Guys you have it easy!!!
liet me fill you in on insurance costs on this little island...
you have got two main types of insurance- fully comprehensive or 3rd party, fire and theft.
young guys here are paying through the nose, think E3000(USD 3600) for a crappy 1litre
city car, which could be 8years old, and only cost a fraction of the insurance.
one of the main reasons why premiums are so high is that the payouts are ridiculously high, although there have been moves recently to combat this, and an Injury Assessment Board set up.
road tax is based on the cc of the engine, running from approx E100 (US 120) for 1litre to E1100 (US 1300) for 3litre and above per annum.
the joy of driving a classic car (over 30yrs) here is that you pay only E44 road tax irrespective of cc. As far as insurance goes, most firms will only take on a classic as a 2nd car, limited mileage, max 10000. only one company, AFAIK, will take on classics as primary car, again with the mileage limit of 10k per annum, though you can opt for lower mileage bands and obviously cheaper insurance. at present, im using my 114 as my sole car, and its costing me in the region of E700 (US 850) pa
And petrol here is running about E4.77 a gallon (US 5.70)
Welcome to Rip-Off Ireland!

This is a tough issue, especially for young drivers. The three things affecting insurance rates are your age, location and your driving record. Obviously, the only one you have very much control over is the driving record part. Although the whole scale was much lower at the time, I paid much more for my insurance from about 16 until I turned 25. After that, age wasn't that much a factor. My wife and I have four vehicles (two of which are classics) and our total annual insurance cost is around $1350.00. Our driving records are clean and we live in relatively low cost areas. We collectively drive about 30,000 miles per year, but mileage isn't taken into account in our rates, even for the classics. At one point about 12 years ago, my wife got just one speeding ticket too many and the insurance on all our vehicles went up considerably. Changing insurance companies wasn't the answer. They all get the same info. The rates didn't come back down until the moving violations eventually fell off the table. If I remember correctly, it took about three years.

The whole subject of insurance really needs some serious investigation if you want to get the best rates. Analyze carefully what you need. It doesn't make much sense to carry collision on your vehicle if two years worth of insurance premiums would pay for the whole car. There are liability minimums that each state requires, but beyond that it's your choice.

Good luck,

Wes

Full Covberage or Partial

On my '84 300SD T/D, I can get Full insurance coverage only if I get a certified appraisal as to the value and condition. Insurance companies here in Ontario, Canada will not issue Full coverage on vehicles older than 15 years. So I have just 3rd party damage, no coverage on my vehicle, regardless of fault. As a 5 year claim free mature driver, that costs me on a family plan (3 cars and house contents) about Cdn.$50. a month with a non-sales agents company.
