Just missed being in a major crash - guy in Porsche not as lucky(wet roads-long story

WOW, not a good evening/night to be traveling on the roads in many areas of the southeast tonight. Very heavy rains encompassing the region. I had to go to Kingsport (next city over about 22 miles west of here) to our local Mercedes dealership to pick up my key I had ordered. It was a very wet go on the way. My mother wanted to get out for a while, so she rode too - we took her car- 1997 Oldsmobile.

She kept saying that she had a odd feeling that something was going to happen on the way down there. It is all highway between Bristol and Kingsport - with a 55 mph speedlimit. We went 45-50 mph most of the way. The traffic was making her nervous, many cars were speeding down the highway, despite the heavy rains and fog. We went down there between 4:00-4:30, and the sun does not set here this time of year until 5:40, but the clouds were so thick, it was very dark and gloomy out. We made it down there- I ran in the BMW-Mercedes-Porsche dealership, into the parts counter and picked up my key. We headed back home- still POURING down rain. This time, we went about 45 mph tops. Huge puddles of water on the road, many motorists still whizzing by about 55-60 mph, I do not know how they were not hydroplaning. As we got closer to Bristol, a 18-wheeler roared by about 65 mph, and a Porsche convertible (new or nearly new) right on his tail. Mom made the comment that they were going to fast and was also saying he was too close to that truck. The truck got into the slow lane, then the Porsche roared on. About 2 miles down the road, just before we got into town and the I-81 freeway ramps, I noticed that the truck was pulling over, then I seen a car in the ditch- off the highway, against the bank with someone crawling out. It was the Porsche! A truck in front of us locked up the brakes, then I had to slam the brakes. I just knew we was going to lose traction and hit him, so I hurried and looked in the mirror to see if anyone was in the left lane, then got over. I got in the median so I could get out and check, but it was too tilted and could not get out of the road. Mom was panicking, thought we were going to get hit, so I got back out on the road, then pulled over and called "911". Then we headed back went through a store parking lot, back to where the crash was, but on the other side of the road. I was weary of crossing the highway, still pouring rain, other motorists had already went over. He was out of the car. It looked like it ripped his shirt, someone was giving him another. Luckily, no one was hurt, that was the main thing. A guy called over and said he was OK. The car held up well, considering. It rested on its top, but the windshield frame was holding up the car well. The car did have a lot of damage- I am sure it was totaled. Only seen one light still working and it was out of the socket. Mom had commented about the light on the back. She thought he was riding his brakes and he had a light out, but I told her that was a fog light that a lot of European cars had and that was probably it. Thankfully, no one else was nearby when he crashed, or it could have been a major pile up. What is also odd is that we normally take the Bristol beltway to Kingsport, which is all 4-lane to the freeway (I-81), but then it turns into a 2-lane road (with some curves) after it passes the interstate, then it joins to HWY. 11W, (about 1/2 way to Kingsport) which is the road we was on. If we had of taken that route, we would have not been on that part of 11W, but who knows - we could have been in a crash there too. Thank God no one was hurt in that accident. We were definitely counting our blessings.

We stayed until all of the police, fire trucks, ambulances came, then we left. I would still like to know exactly what happened. I guess it will remain a mystery.

Believe it or not the rain is still POURING regionwide and looks like much more on the way. Drive safely and SLOOOOOW down.

glad to hear you were fine....

had two close calls this weekend myself...almost got rear ended twice by women not watching the road...one turned her car sideways trying to stop (I was at a red light)....the other swerved barely missing me (as I stopped for another red light) and ran through a solid red light....barely missing traffic that had the right of way.....

hang up the cell phones people when you are driving.

I am not sure, as I do not know a lot about Porsche's, but I think it was a Boxter. It was definitely a convertible and a later model.

Thanks Doc... yeah, there are a lot of crazy drivers out there. I had to go back out a little while ago and about had two more accidents.

All incidents while driving ma's car. I think it has jinxed me.

Just about got totaled out in my moms car today... The famous sliding lane change... at an intersection with 2 stopsigns/lights...

Farwell is the through, and 2 lane each way, Main has stops at both ends, and is 1 lane untill it spans out into the turning lanes...

I was facing West about to turn right, Other guy was facing east with his left blinker on... His light changes and hes obaying it... I go and stay tight right... HE STARTS THE SLIDING LANE MANOVER!!! I gun it, and the ass end kicks out (fwd, light rear) and there was no colision, and I saved it...

Guy signals left back into the lane where he was supposed to be, and passes me with a dirty look on his face like it was my falt...

ERRRRRR...
Full moon tonight, look the hell out for yourself... Drive like everybody wants to kill u if your in a good car

Yep people are stupid. Don't worry I was almost nailed be an Infiniti that was going three times the limit around a bad corner.

Well P cars are pretty safe in high speed accidents. Remember the video of the R129 that flipped several times on the Autobahn and the driver walked away?

The babies are all parked tonight. I drove the ML to work today, because she has BRAND NEW tires on it. Someone ran a red in front of me, and I almost ran into him.....

Luckily, he saw that it was red, and slammed on the brakes, as did I. We barely missed each other, I continued on, and that was it. It is rainy here, and I take it easy, but other people are what I am worried about.

Yeah, this guy was lucky. I was amazed when I saw him crawling out of the window! As mentioned, the car held up good. I saw a little smoke/steam rolling out from the rear of the car (it was on its top remember)- I am sure these are rear engine cars. I just kept hoping that it did not catch fire. Luckily, it never did - at least not while we were there, which was up to about 15 minutes after the crash. I guess they are air cooled, so I am assuming it was not the cooling system. I wonder what it could have been then?

The steam was probably the rain hitting the hot engine. They are rear engined cars but if it was a pretty new one it was water cooled. I want to say 1995 was the last year of an air cooled Porsche.

The windsheild is designed to support the car upside down. It probably had a roll bar as well.

I know MB does this with, if you start to flip an SL a big roll bar pops up.

Hattie, if you try to stop on a dime, from like 60 mph, it will pop too....

Im sure glad that the germans overengineered everything, especially in the safety department.

Yeah I heard that they were having problems with the SL65's at the drag strips. I guess if you get them to hook up its so brutle that the roll bar will pop up!
