Outrageous! Costco throws away perfectly good food!
You know where at Costco you can sample food products, well I saw one of the demonstrators at the Vancouver WA Costco throw food out than serve it up. She had finished cooking a batch of chicken but it seemed it might have been the end of her shift, she quietly scooped up the finished product into the box it came in and then secretly tossed in in the trash can. I saw someone ask her before she tossed it if she was going to serve any of the chicken and she nodded no.
I've seen this happen before at another Costco before. I haven't confronted anyone at Costco about this but I feel this is outrageous. I hate seeing food go to waste especially if it is perfectly fine.

i work at mcdonalds and we throw perfectly good food out just because its been sitting for 15 minutes..
when i worked at the grocery store the bakery would toss perfectly good stuff out because it was one day before expiration ( but they did donate a good part of it to the homeless shelters in the area) my step dad works for wonderbread/hostess IBC the stuff he takes back in either A) he takes some for us B) sold to the farmers for animal feed.. (makes the bacon sweet C) gets made into crutons |

I believe that the Costco example is a miniscule part of the overall problem of tossing out perfectly good food.
Imagine the volume of food the restaurants dispose of on a daily basis because it's just not "fresh enough" for their patrons. It's a wasteful society........from food.........to fuel.........to houses........to.............. |

It is the personal injury lawyers - we would give all kinds of stuff away to the needy if it weren't for the leaches.

The Navy used (maybe still does) to throw leftovers off the fantail when in foreign ports. The locals would hang out in boats to pick up the, often, very good garbage. It was/is ugly and could be handled better.

Years ago (part of a much longer story I've never told anyone here about) I was living with some people in the mountains. All of the food we ate was donated, so luckily there were less problems for people giving it away then. A local pizza place gave us unused pizza dough every Sunday. We'd cook it up like bread. MAN! that bread was good!

We used to raise pigs which we fed the throw away produce from the local super market (not a big chain store) anyway an old friend was visiting from the south pacific and helped me out with the days "produce run". He took pics of throwing a PU truck load of, mostly good, produce to the pigs because the people on the island where he lived (in the Cooks) wouldn't believe it.

Its because customers are stupid and complain about every little thing. We throw out tons of food at the store.
1. The codes are very short and they are for a reason. If the maker of a product can shorten its shelf life by a month they can increase their orders. I eat out of code food all the time! Its fine, and free! ( I guess a perk of working there) 2. Customers complain about ends. Even if you just opened the meat 2 hours ago and 1.5 pounds is left and they only want 1/2 they still complain. Some deli's throw it out others use it. 3. Bread, if it is more then a couple of hours old people stick their noises up at it. So guess where it goes? In conclusion we are a country full of spoiled people who eat junk food and think its good, but would probably starve in many parts of the world.

It is easy to blame the lawyers, being that they are the scapegoat dejure, but the simplest, most probable explanation is in my experience, is compliance with state Department of Health regulations. Costco must get a permit to serve food in thier stores. They must abide by a set of rules to maintain the permit. If they fail inspections, or get cited for violations that are not immediately remedied, they would lose their permit.
If Costco was serving food in violation of DOH regulations, and a customer was injured as a result, I would think that then a lawyer may get involved. |
