Whole Foods Bans Sale of Live Lobsters

.
.
The Austin-based grocer spent seven months studying the sale of live lobsters from ship to supermarket aisle, trying to determine whether the creatures suffer along the way.

In some stores, they experimented with "lobster condos," filling tanks with stacks of large pipes the critters can crawl inside. And they moved the tanks behind seafood counters and away from children's tapping fingers.

Ultimately, Whole Foods management decided to immediately stop selling live lobsters and soft-shell crabs, saying they could not ensure the creatures are treated with respect and compassion.

"We place as much emphasis on the importance of humane treatment and quality of life for all animals as we do on the expectations for quality and flavor," John Mackey, Whole Foods' co-founder and chief executive, said in a statement.

Animal rights activities were thrilled with the decision, not just because of the way lobsters are harvested, shipped and stored but because of the fate that awaits many of them _ being dropped alive into a pot of boiling water.

"The ways that lobsters are treated would warrant felony cruelty to animals charges if they were dogs or cats," said Bruce Friedrich, a spokesman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

It's kind of funny that they took all those factors into consideration when they know the lobster will eventually be boiled alive anyway.

Not that I mean to make light of it, really. Lobsters taste good...but the way they're prepared is disturbing to me and I usually avoid eating them now, as well as crabs. And I'm not a member of PETA.

There used to be this sushi bar in Pasadena which had live lobster and shrimp. They didn't drop them in boiling water.

They took it in the back, killed it, served it up sashimi style. Delicious. $75 per lobster but you get a lot of freebies from the chef.

That's nothing compared to how they dress an eel at a decent sushi restaraunt I can how an average person wouldn't be able to eat after watching that.

Someone should sue them for undue interference with the food supply. I'm sure there are places where these guys forced some smaller seafood markets out of business, so now they have a responsibility to carry a full selection. I just can't imagine food purveyors getting all dewy eyed over crustaceans.

What about dogs and cats?

I love cats if they're prepared correctly. Ummmm! I would NEVER drop one into a pot of boiling water, though! That's cruel.

I don't care

1. I don't shop at Whole Foods. We don't even have them in northern Nevada. There was one fairly close when I lived in Atlanta, but I mostly shopped at Kroger.

2. I don't eat lobster. I tried it a few times, and I just don't like it.

Cat, OTOH is a different matter. I've never knowingly eaten it, but I had the "meat on a stick" when I was in the Philippinnes. It seemed to be chicken, but you never know. Our caterer on Basilan served us goat a couple times and didn't say what it was. Most people thought it was beef, but I had had goat before (and BTW I like goat meat), and knew.

As per your post, the fun thing about chicken is the hilarious antics of the headless, recently decapitated bodies running about for say 30 seconds after "removing"said head.
