Obviously, get the no-line ones and be prepared to exercise your neck muscles as you move your head up and down. Some folks have done well with monocular vision by having contact lenses powered for near and far.

I am 5 days into using Contact Lenses in a Monovision set up. First they determined which eye is dominant for distance and then corrected that eye for distance. The other eye is then corrected for reading and the brain sorts the whole picture out. They say it can take the brain up to 2 weeks to get optimal vision but I don't think it takes that long for most people. I was seeing 20/20 by the second day.
I have never worn Contacts before, so it has taken me anywhere from 1-10 minutes so far to put each lens in. The cost for Acuvue 2 disposables (good for 2 weeks and taken out at night) at Costco is about $30 for 6 pairs. My uncorrected vision is 20/50 and I need glasses to read. So far I am very happy with this Monovision solution and my vision feels better than it has for quite some time.
Good luck with whatever you choose,
Paul

I had a pair and left them sitting on top of a '85 300TD which drove off from the house. I never saw them again.

Jen it is really a lot better to get mono-focal reading glasses and skip the whole bi-focal debacle. Unless you like stumbling or falling down stairs. One possible remedy that I have heard of, is the use of electricians glasses which have the near focus section at the top of the glasses instead of the bottom. At least you won't be falling down the stairs all of the time.

I'm going to second that. I don't like that blurry action. Reading glasses are so cheap -- less than $5 -- why pay a large sum to ruin a pair of your regular glasses?

good grief, I'm not even 40 yet, and I see more vision problems looming in my future. My vision is already awful, to the point that uncorrected I can't see my bedside clock unless I pull it close to my face, almost touching my nose. Now letters on the newspaper and other typed things are getting blurry, even with glasses on. I wore contacts for 20 years, finally got tired of the contacts feeling dried-out and crusty late in the day. I guess it could be worse...

I cannot attest that you ever get used to that aspect!! I have to wear readers but I still (14 years) cannot walk or drive with them. The last prescription pair I bought, no line bifocal, auto tint, anti scratch lens, Italian frames with spring legs, etc., etc. ($350). The dog chewed up the frame and I went to Wal-Mart and got a pair for 5 bucks. That was 5 years ago and I still go back and buy the same glasses when I wear them out or, more frequently, destroy or lose them. I can see a stop sign an eighth of a mile away without glasses but I don't trip over those.

I'm going to chime in with my 2 cents here...

First, I've used multi-focal contacts for a year and love them. Prior to that I used reading glasses with my regular contacts that were optmal for distance.

Since getting the multi-focal contacts I've all but lost track of where I put my reading glasses... that says a lot!

I have a pair of no-line bifocals for use at night and for lounging around the house but I can't stand them... my head is never turned the right way to see what I want to see...

If you can use the multi-focals they are definitely the way to go! There are no problems with stairs or anything! This setup is in effect an enhancement to the mono-vision setup desribed above where one eye is optimal for close and one for distance, but being multi-focal, the difference in the eyes is not so noticeable. They both do close and they both do distance, but one is better for close and the other is better for distance.

I hope that makes sense. Perhaps there is an eye doc on here?

Howdy Jen,
I wore glasses for many years. I wore contacts for about 17 years. I could see better but I started to get tired of them so I went back to the dreaded glsses. Then I had to get bi-focals and hated them. The only way to go is laser surgery and then get a pair of reading glasses.
