Cincinnati delicacies...Skyline Chili and Goetta
I grew up in Cincinnati, have lived away for over 20 years. Any comments on Cincinnati chili (Skyline, Goldstar, et al) and/or Goetta? I must be feeling nostalgic this evening, thinking about this stuff. For that matter, what is "City Chicken"? When I was little I would eat "city chicken" on skewers at my grandpa's house...what the heck is it?

ya
i am here in louisville ky so we have skyline chili and people love it...
but i feel as if the taste buds are dumbded down in the midwest.... its such a waist to put spagetti into chili.... so you pay 9 bucks for 3 tablespoons of chili mixed with spagetti... |

I currently live in Cincinnati (more than a couple forum members harken from the Queen City...) Not that this makes me qualified to respond =)
I hear the Skyline is superior to Gold Star - But I think Gold Star has spread farther from Cinti than Skyline (there is a Gold Star in Athens OH - 3h away...) I'm not a big Chili fan personally.... I could rock Goetta 7 days a week and twice on sunday =)

Born & raised in Cincy, thru WHHS and UC ChemEng. Moved out here in '65 and only rarely have returned. Had never tasted commercial Cincy Chilli until last year, a bit behind the times. However it did not seem particularly special. Oh well.
The Goetta was something our Mom used to make and we all enjoyed that. Don't know if the commercial stuff is the same though. Also had a lot of White Castles and Big Boys back then. Always seemed a goofy deal that you were charged sales tax if you ate in the Castle, but not if you went out to the car!?! I think 'City Chicken' was just the precursor to chicken fingers, ie real chicken that had been cubed and then baked or fried.

Okay, first off I believe city chicken is actually pork. I could be wrong, but that's the word on the street.
Skyline is much better than Gold Star, and if you paid $9 for a three way you got screwed! I think they cost 4 bones or so. You can get frozen or canned chili for the home, so look in to it iffin ya got the jones for it. Goetta is da bomb-Gliers is an excellent locally produced brand that I believe is available for shipping for you transplants. Graeters ships as well. While I wouldn't necessarily agree our taste buds are dumbed down, the midwest diet is a little less eclectic than others, but hey we put chili on our spaghetti here.

city chicken is pork and beef cubes on a skewer, covered in flour and
fried in a pan.

Wow, I had forgotten all about Graeter's...used to go to their store in Western Hills, near what was, in the 80's, Bob Pulte Oldsmobile and Henry Sieve Pontiac near Western Hills HS. I have relatives all over Cinti and Northern Kentucky but haven't been there in 4-5 years...
BTW, St. X won the State football championship this year...Go Bombers!!!

greaters is good ice cream... here it louisville its about 4 bucks...
and yes a 3 way with a pop will cost you just under 10 bucks... and thats a lot for 3 table spoons of chili mixed with spagetti. The break goes like this probably 6.5 for the 3 way and 2.5 for the pop ![]() |
