Do any of you have an automated external defibrillator (or AED) at work?

These devices are largely automatic in operation and easy to use. In case you don’t know they are used to jump start a heart.

We have two of them at my company, one in the fitness center and another one some where else.

Some states restrict the placement of AEDs to where they can be used by folks trained in CPR, but this is not necessary, as they can be used by almost anyone with very minimal training.

This state restriction is a big deal, and is preventing placement of the devices in places where they can do a lot of good. They should be in movie theatres, gyms, public swimming pools, shopping malls, and other public places. I've done quite a bit of research on them and been trained on their use - my company insures companies who sell AEDs.

We don't have one here but I wish we did. I have heart problems and then there is the 750 lb guy that works here that I don't know how he has not keeled over by now.

They should be as common as fire extinguishers

My father died of a heart attack a number of years ago. The ambulance in their small town took half an hour to get there. I don't know whether the EMT's would have been able to save him or not. Of course, I will always wonder. Maybe if these had been around then, he would have lived a few years longer. He was only 59.

I own shares of a company called Cardiac Sciences which develops and manufactures these devices. I know there are several in this business.

I don't have one of these where I work, but I have been trained on how to use them. I'm really surprised to hear that some states have legislated that they can only be used by people who are CPR trained. I am certain a 6-year-old could use one. They literally tell you what to do and won't work if you don't use them correctly, or at least that was the case with the one I practiced on. They check for a pulse and if they find one, the shocks won't be administered.

Also, I'm trained in CPR, and let me assure you that this training gives you no special knowledge concerning defibrilators.

Bill, how much is B100 where you are? We just got a bio shop and it is about .25 cheaper for B20.

Sorry to read of your loss. These are pretty new on the market. There are a number of folks who have bought these, even when it requires to personal expense to do so. While they are not inexpensive, they seem to amount to a small cost when helping someone in dire need.

This is a very important point. I think the legislation I mentioned above is a hold over from years past when defibrillators were not automated. However, it needs to be changed.

I would apply to management in any company to get one placed. And even if you need to have some one trained in CPR to operate it to comply with the law, there are a lot of people around who are CPR trained, just ask around.

Plus, I don't know specifically how the law is written, but a call to the state representative would be a good start. I doubt many would object to rescinding that legislation, or at least to changing it.

Pretty sweet. I paid $2.68 last week for my bio, but it has dropped about $.05 since then. Genuine diesel at the Texaco near my house was $2.98! I may run a lot of SVO this summer just for kicks--I am much too wasteful to get serious about saving $2.00/tank

3, and a half-dozen people trained on them.

Additionally, everybody at work is required to have CPR and 1st aid training and a refresher annually.

Defensive driver training annually.

Boat training alternate years.

Aircraft safety every 3 years.

Airboat training depends on usage level. I'd not feel safe driving one since I haven't had any airboat time in over 2 years. With all the hurricane debris in the marsh, damned if I'm eager to get in one of those rocket sleds.

One of the few conveyances in which I have never travelled. I need to look into that when I head down in August for the Duck Festival.

Great things to have....

Along with BLS and ALS boxes, we have two Welch Allyn AED 20s w/ ECG that we take on flights with certain clients. They are pretty good units and easy to get trained on.
We will probably get two more in the next couple of months. I’m looking at the Phillips line for various reasons. Like the HeartStart XL or MRx.

Zoll makes a good, simple to use/train unit for those on a budget.

I’m not sure how well they would work on a 750lb guy though. Much less, a 450 or 550lb guy. But neither of them would make it onto our aircraft anyway.

Tracy - I’m curious why you asked.
