TV repair question....

I have a Toshiba TV that's about 3 years old. Great picture, etc...

The remote recently stopped working consistently, changed batteries, same thing. Bought a universal remote, works intermittently.

Am I assuming correctly that the infrared thingy on the TV needs to be replaced?

Is it a do it yourself job? Where can I get the parts?

I don't want to spend 100 bucks when the a new TV can be bought for 300 nowadays.

Thanks!

I have cable piped directly into my house, courtesy of adelphia. No box required for basic cable plu standard HBO.

That's all I need, I already have too many choices, I don't need to watch any more TV.

Now, about the repair?????

...searching on Google, Yahoo, etc. would most likely come up with more...although your guess that it is the IR sensor is pretty likely, it may also be the receiver electronics...

If you have a VCR (do people still have these?) you could always hook it up inline between the tv and cable and then just use the VCR remote to change channels.

Well, if your television is going to break, it is as good of a time as any...poor computer sales and increased competition in Asia has caused the market to be flooded with LCD panels...you'll find flat panel products to be heavily discounted now...

It's much more likely to be the amplifier chip than the actual receiver diode or transistor. I've replaced those before. The chips are extremely static-sensitive, and can be blown out by a nearby lightning strike that doesn't affect anything else.
