wife purchased a 2000 Jeep today

Lerado Grand Cherokee, 4 liter in-line six with automatic and rear wheel drive. I put it on the lift and nosed around a little and that is the damnest front axle arrangement I have ever seen. Anyway, she got pissed off this morning and in trying to make me mad went out and bought it off of a used car lot that I am sure had purchased it from an auction. At least she paid cash for it. It looks like it is pretty straight forward in regards to maintaning it from what I saw when I put it on the lift and nosed around underneath. The first thing that came to mind was whether a turbo 617 engine would fit under the hood. Thank goodness her commute is just 4 miles one way because I imagine these things like gas pretty good. If that were my commute I would be riding a bicycle but unfortunately mine is 18 miles so I have to take the 240D.

I rented one of them once.........as a matter of fact it was in Atlanta and I took it to Columbus and back.

I was flabbergasted that this vehicle could suck down so much gas.

I think it took about 15 gallons to make the round trip from Hartsfield to Columbus and back. Just amazing. I was looking for a hole in the tank.

That inline six was used for a long time in the Jeeps, and I've heard that its a pretty stout motor.

Did she buy the Jeep in place of her Honda CRV, or in place of the truck that you were going to buy?

In place of the CRV. Seems the oldest boy has her convinced that the law is "watching" the '81 300D that he had been driving so she has been driving it and letting him drive the CRV. Once she realized I was not going to let the miles get racked up on the 300SD and in all likelyhood not going to help $ out in purchasing the Honda Ridgeline she went out and got it. I'm in the wait and see mode of purchasing any more vehicles right now (but let the right 240/300D come along).

uh oh

what in the world is a push rod? I was looking through the Haynes manual for info on the timing chain and came accross something called a push rod. First dealings with a push rod I have had since owning a Harley Davidson over a decade ago.

Jim , I had one and the engine and tranny were trouble free for 100k. I sold it to my younger sister who still has it now and at 150k it still runs real strong.

My bro in law never does anything to cars 'cept oil changes so you can hear the original struts rattling away, but it runs like as good as the day I bought it.

Funny thing is, the water pump went after 40k miles, which made me thought I bought a lemon, but it's still cranking.

I think we averaged about 15 mpg, and we both drive perty fast.

I loved that thing on the hwy, nice and smooth, although the air noise coming in thru the window seals at 85 was a a little annoying.

I've gone through two water pumps in the time I've owned mine (the first one 24 hours after I bought it. Talk about thinking you bought a lemon). I wonder if it's a big problem with them?

Jeeps are amazing beleive it or not for reliability. Our 95 Grand Cherokee has WAY surpassed our 3 benzes in the reliability department and its not babied much eitheir!

Neigbour has a 2000 Grand Cherokee and no issues at all...I never seen them open the hood once to check anything cause they dont care.

I have not driven it on the freeway yet. From what I could tell when I put it on the lift and looked underneath it looks like it is easy to maintain, everything looks easy to get to and overall the vehicle looks solid. I was glad to see an inline 6 with just rear wheel drive and no she did not piss me off (which was her intention) by purchasing it. As a matter of fact I told her I thought she did a good job picking it up seeing as how she got it for $7k.

Wonder if a turbo 617 engine would fit?

The 4.0 is a great motor. Jeeps also tend to hold thier value pretty well. That front axle is a bit bizzare. When the rubber bushings wear out it will get the "death wobble". Which means that when you hit a slight bump in the road the steering wheel and front end will shake violently until you almost come to a stop.
