has anyone seen a realistic SSK kit car?

Consider -

http://www.craigslist.org/eby/car/162083763.html

It looks like a mutated Jeepster... and that's being uncharitable to Jeepsters.

I've seen Cobra and Porsche kit cars that looked good if not authentic.

No free lunch is fine because I lost my appetite.

I'd still like to do a Meyer's Manx VW conversion, but most of the kit cars stike me as a bit waste of time. So, so much is going to never be much better than rough.

It's awkward that you spoke up. I meant it as a rhetorical question because I haven't seen an 540K or SSK replica that I couldn't spot as a replica from a distance, whereas I can't tell a Beck Spyder from an original. Or a gullwing from m-wingmotors.com. There might be realistic replicas, but I'll bet there are hand crafted rather than built from kits. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Take the Gazelle for example. I don't understand the appeal but that doesn't mean much because I don't understand the appeal of the CLS either. However, the CLS is manufactured by Mercedes so a Mercedes star makes sense. The Mercedes star is no more at home on a Gazelle than it would be on a Taurus. How much would anyone wager the car in this photo is a Mercedes because it has a star on the grill?

Yipes!

In the late sixties or so there was a thing called a ___Excaliber (I think)________ which was built on a studebaker chassis and made to look more or less like an ssk.

Even as a kid I thought the whole concept was a little loopy.

Last father's day I was out for a run and spotted a Gazelle/SSK/kit car.

"Ugh!!" I was really turned off, then I noticed a middle aged man driving with an elderly confused looking passenger. Took me a few secs to realize that it was probably son and Dad out for a ride-- maybe a last ride (?)

I felt bad for being so judgemental. Anyhow, I don't think those Gazelles are designed to be replicas, just something fun with a generic "classic" look.

Point taken, Swede. But I wonder why a Mercedes star on a Gazelle makes it more enjoyable. Seems it'd be every bit as much fun without the pretense.

Aren't hearses Cadillacs so the deceased gets to ride a Cadillac before leaving this earth?

They don't do anything for me. I don't understand the point of kit cars.

Kit cars are okay...to a point...

As genuine Cobras demand stratospheric prices these days, there are at least a couple of Cobra kit manufacturers that offer some really nice clones for a fraction of the cost of the real thing. I helped a friend put his Cobra kit together, and despite the incorrect '86 donor 5.0L Ford drivetrain, it sounded and looked like the real thing!

As long as you didn't open the hood, you had a really cool looking beast to cruise in the weekends, without fear of incident (like some soccer mom t-boning your genuine '63 Shelby-autographed prize).

I like the Manx dune buggy kits...thought about doing mine (except my Super Beetle front end would have to be tossed). Dune buggies are cool, and a lot spiffier when the VW motor doesn't have to lug 1500 lbs of steel pan and body!

But doing a replica kit of a rare specimen is just downright stupid! Doing it right would be cost prohibitive to say the least, and even so, who's going to believe that "Joe Schmo" is tooling down the road with one of five left in the world!???

Bah. Dig down deep and buy a used Excalibur. At least you'll have a real engine under the (front) hood.
