Playing .txt subtitles with .avi movies?

Guys.. I tried searching google on how to play/add subtitles to a .avi movie. I have a comedy film in a foreign language that I'd like to add English subtitle to. What programs or generally how can I play a media program that will allow me to view both?

I'm FAR from being an expert at video editing... but I'd guess that you need some high-end video editing software, such as FinalCut Pro (http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/), or something similar.

Hey Mike.... I finally found a way to get it to work, but not perfectly.

I used a program called "Mplayer" which would play the movie and allow me to upload the .txt file. Problem is that it will not play at the right moment... where the subtitles cover a scene about 30 seconds in the movie

My main problem is I can't play any mpegs, avi's, dvd's, etc on windows media player after trying to download various divx/codecs. What happens is that the media player crashes.... says some junk and then I have to hit the "do not send" button in order for it to go away. It gets annoying as I have to use a different program to play movies now. Anyways of fixing it? I tried downloading the newest media player.. and I still have the same problem.
