Vonage question
Hello!
An older couple that I know, decided to get Vonage. So far, the last few months have been trouble free. However, I got a call tonight from them, and the call sounded a bit garbled. I could still understand them, but there was definitely some digital garble in there. Has anybody had this happen, and if so, how was it corrected? Thanks! -Larry

Have they figured a way to locate you on IP phones if you dial 911? That was one of the early slams and I don't know if they found a solution.

I believe they either had to make 911 work, or quit the service.

The reason the call was garbled is that the upload/download speed of their ISP was being affected. IP phones are directly dependent upon the ISP and their quality of service. Also, IP phones are not half duplex, they are full digital duplex. If you have a decent ISP, the call quality is superior to land line phones with a lot more features for the money. All IP phone providers must provide E911 sevice.

A lot of cell phones are simplex/half-duplex too.
I have Vonage and while the sound quality is not perfect, like analog phones, it sure is cheaper than the 'local' phone company. 911 calls: http://www.vonnage.com/features.php?feature=911

Call Vonage first and see if they have an answer. Sometimes they ship new equipment to replace what you have, but, as powerpig said, it's probably your cable equipment. Call you ISP service provider and relate the problem. My sister had trouble with modem and once new one installed.. Vonage is crystal clear and no problems whatsoever.
I don't have Vonage or local Time Warner's equivalent nor do I plan to get it, but my sister's Vonage performs flawlessly.

Once again, the quality of service is totally dependent upon your ISP. If you're on cable and a there is a lot of heavy use on the network, you will suffer degradation especially if you have one of the lower bandwidth packages. It will also suffer if you're downloading or uploading while on the phone. On another note, I have the new Verizon FIOS fiber optic service and it screams! 30mb down and 5mb up going to 50/10 sometime in June. I've had VOIP phone service for three years and have had no problem even on cable.

I have vonage and the cost far outweighs any negatives for me.
I've had it for about 2 years now, relatively trouble free. Whenever I get a little static, etc..... I reboot the router and she's good to go.
