AirLink router keeps dropping me - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

Over the weekend out NetGear B router went on permanent error so I replaced it with an AirLink G router. With the NetGear my wife's PC would get dropped frequently. With the AirLink all PCs are dropped frequently, and the signal bars don't go as high as with the NetGear.

My hypothesis on the drops is that the PCs try to reconcile a stronger signal like from the neighbor's. Does this make sense?

I tried a Buffalo G before the AirLink and it wasn't any better than the NetGear so I didn't keep it.

Time for a D-Link?

Sixto how many people are also running Wifi in your area? You may be flooded. Try switching to channel 12 I believe. If that doesn't work then get an external antenna which will give a 3-4dB boost and that should fix things up assuming everything is working properly.

Did you have the Netgear locked down with a WEP key?

Its not wireless, but I got this deal runs through the power lines. You plug it in to the wall outlet, then the network cable to it, and you put one from the modem or DSL or whatever and then another with the individual comps. Works greeat and no one can take your signal, I dont think? Not many neighbors in my parts... Might check it out. I tried like a gagillion different wireless setups and found this far superior.

PS- it says on a review its fairly slow, but, for me anyway, its faster than any of the wireless stuff.

color me confused...is your connectivity problem inside your home(LAN)..ie; shared printers and stuff OR is it a problem to connect to the internet from your connection?
Also neighbors may not nbe the problem if you were wireless..I know I can drive down the road with my laptop and get into a variety of different networks just on a lark.....

At this time there's only MAC, no WEP or WPA or anything else while I sort out the problems. I could drop MAC but then neighbors' PCs start connecting. With the old router WEP slowed the connection considerably so I'm keeping it off during this set-up phase.

The main problem is with internet connectivity. I use the Yahoo Messenger box as a gauge. Too often it switches from the contact list to the 'sign in' button. Seconds later it's restored. It's annoying for general surfing but really a bother when it drops a VPN connection.

A secondary problem is when clicking on a link within a browser or email client the application hangs. Sometimes it hangs for a few seconds then proceeds, more often it hangs for minutes which is longer than I care to wait. I restart the application and avoid clicking links.

We don't do any local networking so I don't know if that's working. I don't really care.

I'll probably get another router this weekend and add AirLink to my 'waste of time' list :/

I don't mean that my neighbors are doing anything. I was thinking that the stronger signal from other routers is causing our PCs to switch.

Is there a setting in a wireless device to connect only to named SSIDs? I remove other SSIDs from the available networks list but the list rebuilds itself over time. Nice feature but can I turn it off?

Been there, done that. I think I've tried every brand. I finally wired the house with 10/100 cable.

Its for one unit. Its kind of misleading on some descriptions.

If your wireless card is jumping that fast to neighbors it means that your area is flooded. You'll have to get an antenna to drown out the signal. FCC allows only 0.05 watts of power so you can get knocked out by the 37 other wireless routers and 62 2.4GHZ phones in the neighborhood.
