Rebates

I checked first and saw that a few of you have had problems getting the rebates you were due. I, too, have had this problem, not on small amounts, but $25-$50.00 rebates. I thought I had heard not long ago that the Congress was considering some sort of law banning predatory rebates.

The last experience I had was over a $50.00 rebate from Sirius sattelite radio (whose product I love). Once you have been turned down, you can't try again. It's infuriating.

Anybody else have experiences like this? Any new info on legislation against deceptive or misleading rebate programs?

i had a 300$ rebate on my laptop when i bought it 2 years ago.. i collected the rebate 6 months later when they let me have it.. see what they do is take the "rebate" put it into an account.. collect the interest then give you the rebate they specified.. sure they dont make alot of one but think about it.. one corporation .. millions of rebates.. they come out winner in the end.

I have plenty of complaints about rebates. The whole point of them is to hope that you forget to send it in but since people are getting better at filling the rebates out they have developed more rules to disqualify you and or make money.

1. have a really short rebate postmark date
2. must have ORIGINAL receipt mailed in for a split rebate item (catch 22)
3. must submit original UPC for split rebate (catch 22)
4. cannot use P.O. box
5. must use billing address of order, not mailing address
6. must wait 6-8 weeks (my longest was 14 months after reissuance twice)
7. tiny rebate checks which really look like junk mail and get lost or dumped
8. rebate resubmission deadlines
9. rebate resolution deadlines (they drag their feet on these to begin with)
9. instant rebates with a convenience fee

I have about 5 pending right now. It's frustrating because I triple checked the forms and they denied 4 of them. They say to resend the info which is the same as what I sent them so why can't they just audit what I sent them already rather than making my postal carrier irritated?

I developed a new way of dealing with rebates awhile back. I don't do them. When I open an ad that is all rebates, I put the ad down and read somebody else's ad. If everybody did that, they would go away tomorrow. I just have to shop around a bit more. And I am on VERY FEW mailing lists that way. Every time you fill out a rebate form, you encourage those folks to keep up the scam. Oh, and don't look to the government to do anything SERIOUS about the problem. They just want to look good to you without doing anything to rile the contributors.

Wow, I've only had maybe 2 or 3 rebates last year and got each one within a month or two.

They do have a lot of stupid rules that you have to follow.
Must use black ink, etc....

I used to do rebates and did not have any trouble until this year. Now I have had Symantec ask for a resubmission and Bellsouth attempt to tell me that I did not activate my DSL package within the time period.
I resubmitted the Symantec paperwork and received the rebate.
I called Bellsouth. They admitted the error and said it would be three more weeks. That was last week.

I have now begun going to stores and inquiring about things which I know have rebates, then I spend some time talking to the salesman about it, then, when he/she tells me about the rebate, I tell them I would buy it if they deducted the rebate amount on the spot. When they say "No," I tell them I guess I'm not interested. Hopefully, this will eventually make it back to someone who is listening and has some influence. It creates a tremendous ammount of ill-will.

Sorry I love rebates, rarely have a problem.

In fact the 2 problem ones that come to mind did get resolved in my favor.

Dot the i's, cross the t's perfectly and keep track of them.

They make their money on the fact that less than 45% are redeemed, much less redeemed correctly.

Note we have Menards here, I have so many box knives, screwdriver sets, drill bits, wash mits, even micro fiber towels etc that I got for free that I'll never need to buy some ever again.
