Yeah now this a bomb. Why bunker bust with the little toys when you can whip out the big gun.

I don't think they used any of these in Iraq, although I am sure with such a massive bomb the generals were just itching to find some reason to use it.:D

Hehe

We used the "Mother of All Bombs" in Afghanistan once..its like the Vietnam era daisy cutters on roids

Pretty nice for clearing an area for a landing strip of vegetation/insurgents :D

The British 22,000 pound "Grand Slam" actual was one of the first pentrating bombs. Used in 1945 against the Bielefeld railway viaduct in Germany, which was not destroyed by the thousands of pounds of bombs dropped by B17's, the Grand Slam penetrated the ground next to the said viaducts, created small seismic activity, and collapsed them. It was known as "the earthquake bomb." Pretty cool stuff, all this weaponry.

This new German self propelled gun is pretty impressive. The PzH 2000, or Panzerhaubitze can fire 10 to 13 rounds per minute with its autoloading mechanism    Thats more quickly than soldiers could fire aimed shots with bolt action rifles in WWI!

Leave it to the Germans

Nice bomb!

Explodes prior to hitting the ground. All of its explosive energy is used to create the pressure wave.

One nasty little critter designed to take out entire divisions.

Hatterasguy 06-11-2006 10:46 AM

Now the queston is how much larger can one go...:D I wonder how large of a bomb they can stuff on a transport to be dropped?:D

The MOAB is one impressive bomb, and for the people who attached the pictures that provide scale and reference, thanks. Seeing the pictures of the Tallboy and the Grand Slam reminded me of something, though. Those bombs were carried by the Avro Lancaster, which managed to get those monsters off the ground and on target (well, in the vicinity of the target, but who needs precision with a bomb that big) using a combined 2520hp from four R/R Merlin engines.

Now *that* is impressive.

I used to work with a guy who thought those things weren't that big. It turns he used to set off hydrogen bombs in the South Pacific.
