Wind River Canyon. Wonderful stratigraphy. When I was last there somebody had placed plaques along the road at various strata describing where you are in geologic time. I think it starts at pre-Cambrian and ends in holocene (or reversed, depending on which direction you're traveling).

Oh yeah, it's also a beautiful site.

If you're going to be in the northeast corner of the state, Devil's Tower is pretty cool. It's the giant rock standing alone that was the focus in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. If you're in the western part of the state, Yellowstone and Jackson Hole are worth seeing. Other than that, Wyoming is pretty desolate. Cheyenne and Laramie are well worth a stop if your tank is empty or you have to take a leak. Otherwise, keep driving.

thanks dave. i will be going to jackson i think it is. my wife has a educational seminar. she will fly and i will drive since i have never seen that part of the states before.

and i will deliver the heads from my favorite machinist's crank turner to a shop in (south dakota?) on the way out and pick them up on the way back after they have been tuned up.

Devil's Tower is a must and then the drive over the Bighorn Mtns. is grand. I'd sprint through Yellowstone and head for the Tetons if it were me. There are some easy backroads off to the east of the main road around the visitor center. Lots of wild life, small lakes and privacy.

Buffalo to Tensleep. I drove that at night one winter--dumbass.

lots of dirt

you might want to consider Fort Laramie (near Torrington). It has been restored (mostly) and really captures life there (baking bread, gardens, store, saloon, reenactors, etc).
Hole in the Wall (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) is up north (west of devils tower).
Cody has Winchester Museum and the Million Dollar Bar (lots and lots of silver dollars).
Hells half acre (southwest corner) is full of dinosaur bones.
State Museum in Cheyenne is full of cowboy stuff (chian frontier days starts in a couple of weeks if you have never seen a full blast rodeo).
the state parks behind Glendo and Guernsey dams go for miles of nothing but "deer and the antelope play" (biggest herd of antelope in the world
(250,000+) are near Casper.
probably are some more but its been awhile since i grew up there

I worked in Pinedale, south of Jackson for a few months and there is a surprisingly good Mexican restaurant there on the main drag. Pinedale is experiencing an oil boom right now.

My cab driver pointed out to me that the airport in Jackson is the only one in the US located inside a National Park.

It's a pretty part of the world.

Not much in the way of car museums.

Pretty much all of the northern part of the state (Gillette excepted) is nice. If'n you don't cross the mormons. As stated earlier the drives through the bighorns and windriver canyon are nice. Cody and the northwest portion are decent.

If you drive south towards Casper out of the windriver canyon and take a left at Shoshone on highway 20 you will be as close to the middle of nowhere as you can imagine. There is next to nothing 'tween Shoshone and Casper. A good malt shop in Shoshone though.

If you're in the area:

A little local flavor. Take some pictures of mullets for us.

Unlessin' its turned into a chain, the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar is in Jackson, and has horse saddles for barstools in addition to the silver dollars embedded in the bar. It also has great steaks in the basement.

twalgmuth--a drive through the Teton Pass behind Jackson Hole and on the Idaho border will give you the best damn pictures you ever took. Yellowstone is of course right there too. If you like Austrian food there is a mobil 5 star restaraunt called Stratsi (sp?) in Jackson Hole which is about 15 miles from the city of Jackson. If your wife likes spas, check out the Snake River Lodge in Jackson Hole--you will get lucky;)

The national elk refuge is also in jackson near the airport.

t walgamuth 07-13-2006 10:34 PM

sounds good.

i am already the luckiest guy around!

she does love spas though... i think.

thanks for all the tips.

i definately want to check out the saddle bar stools!
