Got a brand new Deville in to replace a rear bumper cover and tail light. As we took it apart the tech found 3 fasteners that hold the rear bumper on were missing,,, never put on at the factory. The new bumper had a bow in the top of it that bulged up and the trunk lid hit it when it was closed. I don't think GM will EVER get it right.

I was driving my sister's '06 Z71 Burban last week and noticed a quarter-sized hole on the left side of the front bumper. She had backed into it with their other Burban the week before. I have a neighbor in VA that owns a chevy dealership, so I took it in for a look-see. The bumpers on the new suburbans are held on by several PLASTIC pins. She had dislodged one, even though the contact didn't even scratch the paint on either of the glossy maroon vehicles. They popped a new one in and away we went. A break-away bumper in a 6K lb vehicle doesn't seem like a good idea to me.......

This is off the path, but I just wanted to say JD- your a very nice brother for doing that.

Thankis, but she was a pretty nice sister to let me have her new vehicle for 10 days while I was on vacation without having to rent a car since her 14 yo daughter wrecked my beater the first day i arrived

(and all it cost me was a six pack of heiniken light to the mechanic)

The 'break-away bumper' is a plastic cover with no function other than to look nice as it hides the real, ugly, 5 mph bumper.

We also had a 04 Saturn 300 in this week that the owner had ripped the front bumper off when she backed up and caught it on something. Ten plastic fasteners were all that held the bumper cover on the car. We reattached it with J nuts and sheet metal screws. We probably voided her warranty.

Think only GM has these problems? My parents bought a Honda Element and on the second day the 5 speed wouldn't come out of reverse...shift linkage disconnected.

It's not just GM, but I have seen Hondas, Toyotas and Volvos, tapped lightly and their bumpers were held on only with clips.

It doesn't take much of a hit to dislodge them at all.

I was especially upset to see this in the Volvo, as I was about to purchase a then new 960, and saw happened to see one in the body shop with the front bumper hanging off the clips. It had me turn away from Volvo as a contgender to the 5 year old Mercedes W126

Don't worry when Toyota buys GM they will get it right.

There may be plastic holding on the bumpers, but you can bet that Toyota won't miss 3 fasteners.

I have an 04 Murano, a Nissan midsized crossover SUV based on a small compact, the Nissan Altima. My wife and 2 daughters were driving on the local interstate and traffic stopped suddenly. There was a 7 year old Ford pickup ahead of her with a step bumper. My wife was almost stopped and was rear ended at about 20mph by a new Chevy pickup. She gets bounced into the Ford, then hit again by the Chevy and back and forth.

The Murano needed 2 new bumpers. The rear hatch had a scratch and a light broken. The rear step bumper on the Ford was bent down 90*. The ENTIRE front end of the Chevy was gone. Bumper, grill, lights, valence in front of the hood. Everything.

Very surprising for a new pickup to be that fragile.

Toyotas aren't perfect. We had a passenger side door that wouldn't latch and had to be tied closed with rope to get it to the dealer. Same car is going through pads and rotors at a pretty quick rate.
