And I thought Grand Central Station was nice..

The Moscow subway system is ridiculous! A friend who traveled there recently told me the subway stations there are the most beautiful he's ever seen..he said they look like art galleries. I took this with a grain of salt, as it is Russia..but I looked at some photos online..WOW! I'd go there just for the subways!

I've not been to Moscow, but I returned from Kiev recently and can say that they are in the same ballpark- and the price of admission was something like 20 cents. I understand St Petersburg rivals Moscow.

The Romanov Prophecy

I have just been reading The Romanov Prophecy and the writer makes several references to the Moscow subway system. I had heard this before, too. Isn't it amazing that amid all the poverty and hardship in that country, they seemed to find the money for such grandiose subway stations?

They did it to make the people embrace the state run system and not want cars (independance).

I don't know about Russia, but that mass-transit thing hasn't gone over too well here, has it? Just try driving into Washington, DC almost anytime of the day or night!

The metro-rail seems to get used a good bit during the day, and they have all of those parking lots where commuters park & ride, but they shut it down at midnight (or used to). I was in Chicago recently and the L train seems to keep down town moving pretty good.

Isn't it amazing? An most 'Merkens think they are broke and their economy is lost. Yeah, ok. Look at their space program too. Amazing.

Now take a look at our space program (do we even have one?) and our subways... but gosh-dang-it. We're gonna "Help" them-there people of IraK!

(Nice pics!)

I'm certain that is a joke, right? Talk about foil-hat time... wow.

No, they did it because they can and they have pride in their country. Ever been to New York City. 87% of people that live in NY don't have a car... what does that mean? They don't have independence? Duh.

Hmm

No these photos are not mine. However, I read that these "Palaces of the Proletariat" were built mostly during the reign of Stalin. There are lots of busts of Lenin and Stalin all over the place, along with hammers and sickles, etc. I suppose the easiest way to bang in "propoganda" into the heads of the people was by making the system they use everyday extremely beautiful, and associating it with the said leaders.

Regardless of political rhetoric, I found them to be amazing. My friend also commented about how cheap the transit system was, and how despite immense poverty on the streets, that these subways were kept very clean, free of vagrants, and trains always ran on time.

After the fall of the USSR, there was information that was declassified that talked about another "sub-subway" system under the current one, which was supposidely constructed for the transport of troops and military personnel

"The Metro 2 in Moscow, Russia is a 'secret' underground metro system which parallels the public Moscow Metro. This Metro system, built in the time of Stalin and codenamed 'D-6' by the KGB[1], was apparently built for state security and its existence is officially denied to this day.

The length of Metro 2 is rumored to exceed even that of the main Metro, and it is thought to have 4 lines and lie seven levels deep. It is supposed to connect the Kremlin with the FSB headquarters, the government airport at Vnukovo-2, and an underground town at Ramenki, in addition to other locations of national importance.

In 1994 an exploration group, the "Diggers of the Underground Planet", apparently stumbled on an entrance to this underground system."

.....uh no, I am pretty sure the communiss did it to make the people more at home on public transit so they would eschew cars. Think USSR or flip through some old Time magazines or something. All the while these great stations were being built, there were lines of people waiting for potatos.

NASA spent something like 12 million dollars to create a pen that the astronauts could use in space.....the Russians used a pencil. There are people starving in Russia and lots of American dollars going to Russia to help with medical problems for their children and it's comforting to know when these kids have to go to the clinic the subway ride is pretty.....priorities are back a--wards...

Funny. They seem to have the money to maintain it... along with the MIR, and a host of other programs... while our bridges and tunnels fail - and our space program isn't even a player.

But ok.

As far as people starving... I'm certain their are people starving there. But, golly you mean there aren't any people starving in the USA?

Ok. I feel better now.
