They have the same kind of thing in colorado.

http://www.aircarecolorado.com/rapidscreen/

They use onramps and measure the tailpipe emissions. If you pass going through it 3 times, you can get your emissions certification in the mail insted of going to a testing station.

Sorry, diesels can't be tested with it. They also can't fail a car with the rapidscreen tests. I just love covering their "camera" with thick, black soot when I go through them.

I think it's a good thing. If your car passes you dont have to wait in line and deal with a moron at the emissions station. Also it measures the emissions of the car when it's actually driving down the road, no simulated driving conditions here.

It's a spectrograph and fairly accurate, but when compared with the machines CA uses its very accurate. I remember when they first made one and were just trying it out they found that 90% of the smog is created by 10% of the cars.

As far as diesels go, a cars fuel is known by the DMV so if a diesel license plate is scanned they don't do anything.

Most people could tell that by paying attention to the other cars around them.

It irritates me when the anti-smoking nazis are raising hell about second hand smoke and then I choke on the burning oil in the exhaust of the car in fromt of me. Some moron wh has never changed his oil since he bought the car!

Uh oh, I apologize. I think this was supposed to go on the "What annoys the heck out of you" thread. Sorry!

Count your blessings. We have emmissions tests here annually.
