my senior project idea

being the person i am i like technical things, and i like integrating them with my school work... last year my junior year i was feared due to the fact i had enough chemicals to blow the roof off the school( i was trusted by my principal.. hey nothing blew up)... this year.. i want to paint my car.. but.. thats losing interest as i dont really care that much about the paint..ok back on topic

i want to build a pulse jet.. or find a small gas turbine and integrate it onto some form of wheeled transport..

page on pulse jets

ive seen pulse jets on the telly before.. its from what i see a rather simple device...but..dangerous from what it does..

i have been bugging the county tech department head to get my shop a welder.. the middle school has one and they dont use it..

ooo they also have a page on make your own gas turbine...schweeeet

the main part of it is a turbo charger.. hmmmmmmmmm.. ive got myself a new project.. i like making lots of noise and stuff.. if i do plan on doing this im going to invest in a nice set of ear muffs and lexan safety screens..

im planning on majoring in mechanical engineering and one day get my doctorate in it..

1.. develope a paint that won't chip.
2. If you like noise might I suggest straight pipes? Glass packs?

The main danger with a pulse jet is that it has to move fast to operate. It requires a sorce of ram air in the inlet. Think of a way to make a test stand that is feed with a source of moving air and that can measure the thrust gererated by the pulse jet. It can be very small and safer.

You're thinking of a ramjet.

A pulse jet intakes air through a valve in the front, driven by the vacuum created by the exaust exiting in the rear. It can run while standing still, provided you are able to start it.

im talking pulse jet.. looks like a U on its side.. but im going for the gas turbine... first thing i will buy is a nice 3/8 thick sheet of lexan and make a protective shield incase something decides to frag... the turbine will be rotating around .8 mach

Did you see the thread . .

Did you see the thread about the guy who put the jet engine into the VW? There's a nice project for you. Dunno if it will result in any added success with the chicks, but man, is it ever impressive!

I'm sure it would be worth an A in shop class, though.

Most schools frown on flammable, poisonous, explosive and animal projects. Might want to check before you go too far.

It maybe safer and more interesting to build a Sterling. In that way you can learn an awful lot of physics without blowing your head off or burning your mom's petunias.

i had a biodiesel processer in my shop at school... 55 gallon drum of methanol in an explosion proof cabinet, proper ventilation..i always put safety first, stirlings... boring... i want fast.. cool... loud.. dangerous... as long as im standing in front of the intake( well not on it but you know) and the thing decides to frag any peices will not shoot forward but continue on their spinning path which will be stopped by 3/8 or 1/4 lexan or polycarb. a chemical fire extinguisher and video recorder will be by..

I dunno, Bot. It sounds like fun to me. Of course my parents back yard never had much grass in it. Just scorched, blackened earth, burned out metal hulks, and the like. Boy did I have fun out there!

I remember the story of a science project where the topic was to design an atomic bomb (on paper). When he went to get his grade they said he passed but he wasn't getting his paper back, it had classified top secret.
