Winders remote desktop

I have a question regarding widers Remote Desktop.

In the "Computer Name Field" I enter the web address of my server which is mail.XXXXXX.com and I connect to the actual server. How do I address is so it will go directly to my specific computer?

Any help would be greatly appreciated I know I am missing something very simple.

PS. I have no problem loggin in using my web browser, by entering the address and choosing the connect to my computer option within IE but it is lengthy and RDC seems to be much faster.

Remote desktop

If your computer is on the network, you can either use the ip address of dns name.

If on the internet, you'll need to use an additional service like dyndns or go to my pc.

Hope this helps.

All the best

forget all that go to my PC stuff, go and use a program called Hamachi. It's secure P2P for VPN. Along with remote desktop you can access your computers anywhere there's internet, as long as they are on. In fact, I'm responding from the home computer while I'm in Santa Ana right now.

the problem is I can't hit the computer behind the server, the ip part is obvious but addressing so it will go through the firewall and server is another. I can make it work by accessing the main server and using RDC within it to my office computer but I would like to reduce the somftware layer.

Hamachi on both home and office computers should go through firewalls and establish a VPN extremely transparent to you. You can be at home and do anything on the work computer you can do from work and vice versa. This leaves you running two programs; Hamachi and RDC.

If RDC works why do I need Hamachi?

because it's a severe PITA to connect two computers on different networks (like work and home) via remote desktop without a 3rd party program such as PC2go or some such. Hamachi is free and easy to use and has no monthly fees. I'm assuming that you can load software on the computer at work? Here's a discussion about Hamachi on Security Now!. Should answer some of your questions. Try it I think you'll like it and it'll eventually do way more than just Windows. If you're interested in Hamachi let me know, Mrs. Peragro hooked us up with it a while back and it's what I use when I'm in a hotel and want a VPN back to the home computer. I'll see if she'll send you a quick start sheet.

I also have a hack somewhere that allows two people to be on the same XP machine at the same time. Remote desktop doesn't allow that out of the box (violates the "one person using it on one machine at a time" rule that MS has for XP). Let me know if that is something you'd like and I'll try and dig it up.

Thanks, I have the XP hack. Does Hamachi run faster than rdc?

You run remote desktop through hamachi. Hamachi connects the two computers over a virtual private network. Basically, start up hamachi at work, go home, start up hamachi and then remote desktop into work, takes all of about 2 seconds. It'll be like you're sitting at you desk at work - to the extent that you can accidentally shut the remote machine down. Which is fine if that's what you want but there's no one there to turn it back on if you want to log in again.

I think they're in the beta process for the apple version. That should allow you to remote into your apple and work on it from your PC and vice versa. It's worth a look if nothing else. try episode #19 on security now! as well, it's more info on Hamachi and security therein.

I read the security now! article and it looks interesting because some isps are blocking the RDC ports. I am going to give it a whirl.

should be an easy set up, the wife said it was one of the easiest things she's ever done on a computer. I think you'll be pleased. I was. Good luck, let me know how it turns out.
