Monitor issues?

I'm hoping someone can help me out with a few problems I've been having ever since I got back online again.

Ok, here's the deal; the motherboard died on me in my newer computer so what I ended up doing is taking my new hard drive from it, wiped it clean and installed it and XP into my old emachines computer, a "633IDS". Everything works great and all, but the image "jiggles" (think jell-o) on the screen for lack of a better term. That and any video I try to play seems to only play a few frames at a time and skips a lot, audio is ok.

I have two pc133 128mb memory sticks in it- someone suggested they have to match (one is slightly taller than the other- different brands), i had tried it with only the original one the comuter came with in it and it still did the same problems (that and it made the computer slow as hell!).

So I'm thinking I was going to try and see if there is an updated driver for the video card- am I on the right track and if I am, how do I check for one??

(hey, I only know how to fix cars!)

a few things:

1) see if when you wiggle or move the monitor cable the situation improves...

2) Degauss the monitor.

3) if the monitor is close to a flourescent light, stereo amplifier or speaker (basically anything with a eletromagnetic field) move it away or move the object away from it or turn the object off. This was the case with my Sony monitor..I had placed an old 1978 Audio Pulse Digital Time Delay amp next to it..when it was turned off the screen was fine..but when it was turned on the screen jiggled.

Hope that helps...

Degauss? umm.. explain please...

If it helps the monitor is a 17" plug and play lcd flatscreen. I guess I could swap with a tube monitor and see if the jiggling goes away, but the video slowness would probabaly still be there.

cables and placement arent an issue. When I had loaded the operating system I had it set up on the counter downstairs, I just brought it back upstairs to its usual spot when I had it before. Problem still present.

any word on updating the drivers?

ah LCD flatscreen.....

i dont believe any of what I mentioned affect flastscreens...

degauss is used on CRT's.

you can give updating the drivers a try....if you havent installed drivers since the windows installation...more than likely the drivers are a Microsoft build and are pretty old. What kind of graphics card does the computer have anyway?

edit: video slowness is PROBABLY a driver issue. updating should fix that.

thats what i was thinking, video is built into the motherboard on this one.
Is there a folder or program i can run to check for updated drivers or do i have to do it manually, aka figure out the make and model and go searching?

in xp..

go to the control panel -> system -> hardware tab -> click on device manager...

a new window will open with a treel....click on "display adapter" and it should list the device...if you tell me what the device is listed as i can look for the driver and give you a link...

You may be running XP on a processor that is really weak (633 celery?). What was the newer computer that died? Why not a new MB? What makes you think the old MB died? There is some really strong, low priced hardware out there.

Here's your machine's specs -

http://www.epinions.com/pr-E-Machines_etower_633ids_ETOWER633IDS_PC_Desktop/display_~full_specs

It's not really up to par to run XP properly, IMO. CPU and memory - esp. memory - are too low. It's capped at 256 MB, so you can't expand. Barring any obvious hardware issues (damaged/loose cable, damaged connectors) I suspect you may be having memory issues. I doubt a driver will fix this issue. The standard XP drivers should be more than sufficient to run normal video apps.

As Twitch stated, you can get newer hardware to run XP for a few hundred bucks. Good luck!

Holy hell, the bus is 66mhz. If you read the detailed specs for XP, you need an 800 mhz computer with at least a 100mhz bus. The reccomended reqs are 1.2 ghz with at least a 133 mhz processor.

And tom compound this, you have the celery processor. It has a 64kb cache. This is one of the biggest bottlenecks on a PC. No matter how much memory, how fast the hard drive is, or how powerful you processor and bus are, if you have a small cache, your computer is going to be slow. My old AMD64 machine had a 1024kb cache. I only had 256 megabytes of memory in it, and it still flew.

My parents have a celery processor computer thats in the guest room. It is maxed out, 512 mb ram, 1.2ish ghz processor, 7200 rpm hard drive, geforce fx5900, but with a 64kb cache. This computer can barely run windows. It is so choppy and slow.
