Ran a toll booth in California

on the SR-73 (Newport Beach/Corona Del Mar). It was my first time to go through a toll road. I was lost and had to exit, so I did the right thing by following the car in front of me and stopped at the side where you deposit money ($1.50) in the basket-type thing. Then I had to go back on the freeway, but this time I got confused, and distracted as I was trying to get directions on the phone. Instead of going on the side where you drop money in the basket, I at the last minute swerved to the left where it says Fastrack or something like that. And right when I passed it I realized I made a mistake. In my rearview mirror I saw the cameras on top of the signs, though I didn't see any flashes given that it was near twilight.

Does anyone know how much a toll violation is in California, in particular on the SR-73 that runs through Newport Beach? How long does it take for me to receive the notice in the mail? And can I contest it seeing that it was an accident and a first-time violation? Thanks.

I don't know about California. It is $15 plus whatever the toll is here in Maryland. I would imagine it should be in the neighborhood of $15 - $20.

It's $75.00 in NJ.

I had the van and legitimately had the EZ-pass with me. But, the machine failed to read it and they couldn't verify my license plate with their records (the van was never provided to them as a vehicle with an EZ-pass).

Ticket in the mail with a perfect shot of my plate. An explanation and payment of the $.40 toll was satisfactory.

Brian,
The reason I know about Maryland toll was because I did exactly the same thing like you. I took my EZ Pass to MA on business trip, drove past a toll in a rental car and the light flashed me to call EZPass. I did when I got home and the lady told me the fine would be $15 because the license plate did not match my EZ Pass but she could not tell if there indeed a violate cited. Make sure you don't use your EZ Pass out of state if you are not driving your own car.

That's interesting. They were quite apologetic to me and explained that it's in my interest to provide all of my vehicle plate numbers for the account. Then, if the machine fails to read a plate, they will simply type the plate into the system and manually charge the account.

No additional fine.........just pay the toll.........so I sent them a check for $.40.

But, clearly, it doesn't work with rental cars...........

My dads friend just ran one in either MA or VT. He got mailed a $25 ticket.

Oh well it could be worse, doesn't affect your insurance or anything like that.

Install one of those licence plate covers that diffuse the light. They work pretty well.

We don't have any toll roads around here, thank God. The last toll road I was on was in Oklahoma several years ago...never had the opportunity to run a toll booth.

You might be in luck here, then again, if it's your first time on a toll road, meaning it's not a routine thing for you, maybe not.

I accidentally went through one of the fast trak gates on the Bay Bridge a while back -- I got a letter in a week or so with a photo of my license plate. I think the fine was $28 or an option to have it waved by enrolling in the FastTrak dealy since it was my first offense. I'd been planning to check it out anyway, I cross one of the bridges once a week or more, and it actually costs a bit less.

But if you hardly ever use a toll road, it might not be something that would work for you.

Get a lic. plate frame with polarizing material over the plate. Looks like clear plastic, but it blanks out the numbers to the camera. That IS a cloaking device! It works on the stop light cameras, too, I believe.

When I bought my first 300TD I picked it up in Maryland and drove it home to New York. I hadn't registered the car with EZ Pass. It worked on some of the tolls and not on others. I got a bill from the Maryland DOT to pay the toll. There was no fine. Then I added the car to EZ Pass.
