Car buying advice

Hi All

Well, good news. I just got a tech job in Mountainview, CA. Add another to the millions of software engineers in silicon valley. So, I'm moving from Toronto.

The 190 2.6 is going to stay here with a close friend. I am open to suggestions as to what to work on to future-proof it somewhat. Timing chain comes to mind.

Here's the big question: What car should I get? Parameters in DECREASING order of importance:

Budget - $3K, willing to go upto 4K, maybe, possibly
MANUAL TRANSMISSION - I'm sick of the slushbox
Inline-6 engine, will settle for a V6 or a 16V 4 cyl. Would also consider a diesel
Rear wheel drive
Preferably German

So, it appears that I'm only in the market for a 190E/300E 2.6 5-speed with 120K miles+. Anyone know one for sale?

How about an E36 325i? Are they as easy to work on as 190s? As (un) reliable? As smooth?

Any other ideas? Japanese cars? I don't want to buy American.... yet....
