Marques and Car's.

After my intentional delusional Ferrari thread a day ago something hit me in the face about cars. My friend purchased his new Ferrari F430 today and the ride home was remarkably euphoric. Not only was I glad to be in a Ferrari again (even in the passenger seat) but we discussed the feeling that a car has. The case and point was we took my 4 year old daughter and although she has not seen or heard a Ferrari in the last year and a half her face lit up like it was Christmas morning when we entered the dealer...so much that the manager commented that she is definitely bitten at her young age and let her sit in the Domino's Indy car.

IMOHO a well driven 240D has more Marque than a new MB (600's and AMG's aside) than most other MB's.

What do you think contributes to Marque? Production numbers? Longevity? Personality?

It has to be readily identifiable. Used to be you could see a grill on a car a half mile away and you knew what it was. Todays rides all seem to look alike.

I think though, that a real marque is in the eyes of the beholder (driver?). If you get great enjoyment out of driving it and working on it, and you would miss it if it were gone, it's a marque.

IMHO.

In 2006, after 30 to 40 years of daily use, any car would be a pos. A huge issue today with early beetles is the quality of parts on the market. Unless you want to spend big $$$, almost all of the parts are made in Brazil, Mexico, and China. After a while, the car isn't a real beetle, it is indeed a pos because of the pos parts used to restore the car. A good German beetle, made before 1971, is a joy to drive.

Soul, and class. Two things that no amount of money, testing, and engineering can put into a design, as Lexus proves.

One of the guys at the club is just finishing a resto on a 1967 or 68, 911. Man that thing sounds sweet, it may not be as fast as a modern one. But it goes about it an amazing fashion.

Ferrari is in an interesting market, they don't need to advertise because enough people want them. They just build a product that everyone wants. Not to mention an amazing one, how does one have a bad drive in a Ferrari?

Thats why I dislike Lexus so much, an LS430 is a darn fine car. Really how does one find a fualt in a Lexus? But they are about as exciting to drive as a blender. I'll take an old knuckle dragging MG over any, any day.

i like the old beetles...

i think the car has personality.. all my cars have.. except the temp.. it had no soul.

the benz has the most, you have to treat her right or she will bite.. i always thank her for bringing me to school or home or work.. and in return she doesnt give me any guff... now if i look at another car and lust for it she will get pissy and start acting up on me.. so i have to apologize and do something nice for her. like wash and wax her.. then its all good.. sure im crazy but hey.. whose not on this forum

That is right on the money. I will also take my 1985 300D over anything Mercedes has made since then.

E55's S600 is a huge exception to the rule calling that car anything but fun would be ridiculous...no ludicrous speed.

Soul. Hat nailed that one. A car has to have a soul.

Its like Jeremy Clarkson said. Jeremy Clarkson is a believer in the fact that cars have souls. He was quoted in a magazine article about his SL55. He says his SL is good at chess and can tell when he is feeling bad. He says it cheers him up by giving him a nice massage.

I think my Austin-Healey 100 is a marque, and maybe one with a little class too.

The photo of it next to the yellow truck was taken at a car show in Silver City, NM. The other one was at Pinetop, AZ.

Justin,

Funny you should say that about Clarkson, my sig shows I like reading his books.

He's just come out with a new one entitled "I know you got soul"

The blurb reads, "It's hard to put your finger on exactly what gives a machine "soul" but it's there in the heroic failure of Concorde to change the world, the mystifying faith of Count Zeppelin in his flammable airships, the deadly simplicity of an AK47, or the splendid pointlessness of the Dreadnought battleships.

\In "I know you got soul", Jedremy Clarkson celebrates the planes, trains and automobiles that matter to us anjd tells the stories of the geniuses, boffins and crackpots who put the ghost in the machine.

Gotta start looking for that one on UK ebay one of these days...

The cover photo on the book, BTW, shows a new Rolls Royce Phantom.....
