good grief, I bought a SAAB 900

I won a 1990 SAAB 900 on ebay today, didn't win the 79 Buick Riviera I really wanted though. I plan to pick it up this coming weekend and start playing with it. It is a terrible seafoam green with tan mousefur seats, non-turbo 5 speed 3 door hatchback. It reportedly has a fuel pump problem...we'll see. I gave $450 for it, so I can't get hurt too badly on the deal.

Hooolly Moooooooolly, man, you are a glutton for punishment.

I don't think I could get my wife to sign on to all of the car projects you are taking on.

You must've married one heckuva tolerant woman.

Well, the good news is, I didn't buy the 1969 VW Westphalia camper with smiley faces painted all over it that my daughter found on craigslist last week...she swears she would rather drive the camper than the Buick...my neighbors would just DIE if that thing got parked in front of the house.

My wife just doesn't give a hoot about the cars, as long as we have enough cars in running condition that everyone gets where they need to go, and I don't spend the grocery money on my toys. I think she's just glad I'm at home, not keeping a bar stool warm like a lot of her friends' husbands.

You coulden't make me own a Saab. They sucked so bad at building jets, they decided to build cars insted.

Who in the heck made the choice to build the tranny AS THE LOWER PART OF THE ENGINE and PUT THE BELTS AGAINST THE FIREWALL? Don't get me started about the 900's clutch or axles....

We need to take all the 900's off the planet and melt them into soup cans.

I had a '67 Saab 96 and the 95 (the wagon version) with the V-4. Nice cars in a lot of ways but a bundle of problems as well.

Who knows? You put $500 into it, along with the $450 purchase price, you might get $2 K 's worth of service out of it. Or....

These things are always a gamble...that's what makes it interesting for me. I don't mind the chance of losing a couple of hundred bucks, and if by some fluke it turns out well, then I'm sitting pretty.

Just what we need, another saab story.

The only ones I liked were the old 2 stroke 93's and such from the early '60's,bizarre,smoky,bulletproof machines great in ice and snow.

True, the transmission location makes transmission service more difficult, as you must remove the engine and transmission as a unit.

But what don't you like about the clutch? You don't have to remove either the engine or transmission to renew the clutch on these cars. When I drove 99's (which are very similar), I could change the clutch in an hour. Add fifteen minutes for a turbo car.

To minimize the turbo lag with a manual transmission:

When releasing the clutch, floor the throttle pedal and use the clutch pedal to keep the RPM at 3K or above. The turbo will begin to spool before you start moving, and you'll very quickly achieve full boost.

This does tear up the clutch, but it's so easy to change on the 99/900 platform that I just didn't care.

On the 96s, you had to pull the engine/transaxle to change a clutch. I had mine out 9 (nine) times.

The clutch replacement you describe sounds pretty nice. Putting a new clutch and driveline in my Bimmer was one of the harder jobs I've done on a car. Put the tranny back in by myself, you wouldn't think it would be that hard, but Lord have mercy...

I wish my wife would let me invest a little in a few project cars.

I don't have any bad "extracuricular activities" like some of my friends. I've got one friend who is a serial adulterer, one who drinks more beer than what is healthy, one who spends too much money betting on sports, and another (believe it or not) who joined the Masons, and spends all his time on a bar stool at the Masonic lodge.
