Still decent people in the world

I made a run to the store tonight and returned home; when I returned I was enjoying a fresh watermelon picked from the garden and a guy came up my driveway; in order to access my house you have to go around a gate and go about 600 more feet so anyone that comes here is committed.

So this guy is approaching me and the family with his hands in the air saying something, I'm inclined to kick ass but his demeanor seemed OK so I approached him and he had my Blackberry in his hand and said he found it on the side of the road and called the last number the person he spoke to told him where I live and to approach with caution ---- hence the hands in the air LOL.

Anyway he is a guy that is one of the local "night walkers" that walks the country roads at night, personally I viewed him as a vagrant whack job, he was slow talking and was obviously not the smartest guy in the world but he complemented the house turned and started to walk away. Obviously I wanted to reward him so wifey ran in the house to get him a reward which was $10.00 ---I'm not thrilled with that but she was bit flustered and grabbed the first bill in the deck when I see him again I will hand him something more substantial although he brought it to me expecting nothing.

Never judge a book by its cover.

I was the idiot for leaving my phone on the bumper.

I see him on a regular basis looking for pop cans, MI has a 10 cent deposit so I guess the Blackberry was paydirt but I don't think he was looking for a reward he's just a guy trying to make it. I have no idea what his history or mental capacity is but I am going to hook him up with a local contractor for clean up or something like that. Labor is cheap but honesty is golden, it may be his golden blackberry because I don't think he would be hired otherwise.

At least you were nice enough to give him something in return.
I have returned phones in the past and get a rushed thanks leaving me cold.
not expecting money but at least warm courtesy.

"Pay it forward," as they say -- help someone else out next time you have a chance. Not that you don't do so already, but what goes around comes around (which may well explain why you got your phone back in the first place). I try to do little things like help folks who are broken down on the roadside (even if it's just changing a flat), and people are always so grateful to have someone stop.

Anyway, cool story!

Yeah losing a phone would really suck! Come to think of it I really need to sit down and make a list of all the contacts in mine!

Next time don't leave it on your hood!

And apparently brave, too.

There are still good people out there, it's nice to see that reaffirmed.

Labor is cheap, but honesty is golden- I like that. Glad it worked out for and you have a nice neighbor, they are hard to find.

Found a cell phone at the foot of my driveway on my way to work a few months back. Brought it to the office and before too long it rang and I answered and told the caller I had found it and to have the owner call me and they could pick it up. Turns out it was her mother's phone and mom lived in the neighborhood and must have dropped it when out walking.
I left the phone with our receptionist and when she picked it up, she said "tell him I said thanks" and left.

I was just a tiny bit miffed by the lack of a personal thank you. So much for good neighborhood spirit.
but ain't that America....

Maybe she didn't see the humor in my remark about using it to make two calls to Rome!

Isn't it sad that our first reaction to someone's kindness is often suspicion? Being surprised by honesty and kindness is always a treat, though.
