Calliope music?
Where can I find some good audio of a talented steam/air Calliope player?
Example of the music I'm looking for: http://ebaumsworld.com/2006/07/rube-goldberg-machine2.html |

Nothing. It's just one of those odd things I get stuck in my head and have to explore. I even found the Monty Python theme.
I'd love to build one, but you know how it goes. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ |

Interesting thread. I had a co-worker years ago who had such an interest as a hobby. He hung out with a group of enthusiasts who actually salvaged and restored them. Calliopes in general spanned from the pipe-organ types that most folks are familiar with, to a number of automated musical contraptions that handled several instruments for large dance halls of old.
He had me come along and meet a guy who restored these for people, and demonstrated one in his home that played a violin and piano. As well as a few trumpet types in his warehouse. He also gave me a video of a visit that his club made to a peanut mogul's mansion (supplier to Planter's) who had an insatiable hobby of collecting such items, but the piece-de-resistance was a completely restored movie-theater sized pipe organ enclosed in a 300-seat theater that was modified to operate via MIDI! The guy had artisans and technicians flown in from Germany to build this thing, and his house was specially isolated to house this giant spring suspension setup to absorb the large bellow-type vibrato actuators!

There used to be a place somewhere near Chicago, maybe just in Indiana, called Svoboda's. There was an enormous collection of working contraptions, such as Calliopes and other automatic music playing devices.
Anybody ever hear of it? Where exactly is it - I think I'd like to revisit the place one day.

I seem to recall seeing the Delta Queen on the Ohio River when I was a kid, playing calliope music...although in hindsight it was probably recorded, not live.

davestlouis,
You remember correctly, the calliope on the Delta Queen was very live. Some years ago the DQ made it up the Arkansas river to near Tulsa and we went to see it arrive and hear the concert that was played later. And for 'Forced Induction' try this site for some clips of the Ohio & Miss. riverboats. Playable and downloadable (MP3) tunes on several instruments are listed. http://www.steamboats.org/ecaliope.htm

there is an old "Theatre Organ" north of cincinnati at a place called 'The Music Palace"
I'm not sure why that place is still in buisness - the food isnt very good, I've never seen more than 5 people there... but OMG, doe it have the coolest big organ/birdies/pipes/drums/keys/big blower musical contraption I have ever seen. For a while, thats what I wanted to do for a living - fix stuff like that, but conveyors pay better =) -John
