*****ing about struts on the 89 trofieo thread

GM, I hate you

why do you have to make life difficult?

Dead sturts at 17 years old, with 145k miles on it, WTF, they're supposed to last forever, didnt u know that?

Right now it's sitting with the ass on ramps, and jackstands under the (sub) frame...

the springs scare the hell outta me BTW
bought struts ($120)... needed to rent a strut compresser ($60) and then found out I needed a 2 jaw puller ($40)

GOD DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll be getting my $100 back in a few days, but dang, that's a week and a halfs pay

anybody got tips on doing struts on a FWD car, that my hayes maunal will forget to tell me?

tks alot
~Nate

runs great... it's needed struts, rotors, pads, and motor mounts since my uncle bought it...
it also needed a windshield, catalatic converter, and 4 tires, which he bought for it.

He then ditched the car onto me for $800 (he had 2x that into it total), and after I get the struts and allignment finished (120+55), I can get the brake pads for $10, all 4 corners, and the rotors for $7.50 each

I coulda got the struts for $30 each, but I didnt want to risk ruining the $100 a peice frount tires, so I paied 2x what I could have

My uncle knows a parts guy, who wouldnt be too hard to track down, so I wont mention anything more about him online

besides, it's gonna get cold soon, and I dont wanna have to fix anything when it's cold out... brake pads, and rotors... pff, a day tops

Since it's up in the air right now, I'm gonna change the fuel filter, because I'm waiting on the damn parts truck to show up at checker

One problem I'm having, is that the cotter pin's stuck in the tie rod end, and I cant get it out (soaking it in PB as we speak)... the end split when I tried to use a screwdriver, and I snapped the other end off with a vice grips

I'll square off an end of a nail, and hammer it through, if I cant get it out soon

~Nate

popping ball joints scares the hell outta me, just so you all know...

clickityclickclickityclick KAPOOM

Changes shorts, moves to other side, repeat

them are scary MFers... wish I had some help with this project, but I'm alone for the weekend, and my friend's working

dont get too worried, I've got my cell on my person so I can call an ambulance if need be...

That'd be awesome, saving $80 on struts, and then getting a few thousand dollors worth of medical bills... just awesome

My mom used to have an Olds with the 3.1, kind of liked eating $80 injectors. Looks like a Honda Accord will be replacing it, only need the tools now for my MB's.

I didn't do the rear struts on my Camry because I was selling it, but they were clunking pretty bad. Looked like a huge pita, so I just didn't do them. Car drove fine, three years later afaik it still rides fine, they just clunk more.

sweetness

10 hours or so into it, and I'm retiring for the night. I'm about 3/4 of the way done... one side compleatly done, the other side's taken apart, waiting for me to mess with the spring compresser

A few thing I HAVE to say are as follows...

Tie rod pullers scare the HELL out of me, I did the 2nd one, and this time it shot rust onto my safety glasses (didnt the first time, no glasses... )

I hate spring compressers, especially if all you have are a ratchet, and a wrench for them... DAMN hard work, and it never ends

Reason I dont own any, is because I'd make my own before spending $100 on a good USA set, and renting them is free, just put down a $40, or $60 deposit depending on what u need.

Compressed springs scare the hell outta me too... got one 3/4 of the needed compressedness (werd), and the cheap ass tiawan POS slipped, and the spring did a slinky manover... In my brilliance, I kicked it out of the garage, and slammed the door.

Waited an few minites , put on some glasses, and decompressed/repressed them, and they didnt slip that time

Current issues are...

Cotter pin's broken off in the tie rods... dammit...

Got one out, but the other one's not budging... I'm soaking it in liquid wrench... wish I wasnt out of PB...

Any ideas on it?

taking it in for an allignment on monday, or sunday night...

I was wrong on the price, checker didnt have the low quallity monroes, they had the stabletrak? ones... mid grade, $60ish each all said and done.

to do have them done at work, woulda been $200, plus a $55 alignment...

255-170ish (bought $10 in tools... so 160)
$95 for an assumed 13 hours of work (generious breaks included... mabey 7.5 hours of acual working)

95/7.5 is damn near $13 an hour, so I've been paying myself a little less then twice what I make at work ($7.25)

I quit, and I've been waiting a LONG time to say this, but...

I'm done for the day, I'm spending the rest of the evening drinking beer

Night all, any tips for the cotter pin would be appreciated

~Nate

why not replace the tie rods? if your gonna have it aligned anyways. maybe try some heat, cooled by oil. or get the other end flush with the tie rod and use thread locker or nylocks instead of cotter pins.

rides AWESOME... doesnt bottom out at the end of my driveway. Drives straight. the warped rotor effect is SO much less (used to build on eachother)

corners better, doesnt "bounce" over potholes (muchless continue to do so, like before)

I spend around $140 total (parts=120, tools =10, gas=5, food for my friend=$5)

should spend $50 and get it aligned... but it does drive straight, it just "still" squeels over the painted lignes a little bit, when turning... o well

I still will be saving about $100, mabey...
