Texans: Karl Rove, whispering campaign against Ann Richards in '94?

Just caught wind of this.

http://www.laweekly.com/news/news/dont-mess-with-texas/1345/

In the early ’90s, before we learned Governor Ann Richards was a lesbian, only the political cognoscenti in Texas knew Karl Rove’s name. Richards lost to George W. Bush in 1994, though before the race began, she had approval ratings in the 70s. She made the mistake of underestimating Bush, dismissing him with her signature-mark humor. She also underestimated Rove. And probably never believed he would dare to out her. The fact that she was a grandmother and a heterosexual provided her a false sense of security.

More.

That is such old "news" I think it was found in a Cro-Magnon cave painting. People have made a life-long hobby of "misunderestimating" Bush and rather than face the simple fact that he his a whole f**king lot smarter than they are, they stagger blindfolded by their own butt-ignorance trying to pin various tails on various donkeys.

Look at the history of Bush in politics and you come away either believing he's a puppet with a thousand controlling hands stuck up his butt or he is his own man who commands with a tightly controlled, loyal staff. People who hate him will only see a thousand hands up his butt, which will result in underestimation and loss. Look at the record.

On Ann Richards, she was one of the few politicians that I always enjoyed listening to. I'll bet she wrote that "silver foot in mouth" speech herself, rather than one of Clinton's Hollywood writers. It was just so classically Richards. Pungent and finely targeted. As governor, she was competent but not inspiring. She governed from the middle-left in TX (which is just about dead-center for the rest of the USA). She was not a boat-rocker or innovator. She was a manager.

The truth is that folks in TX were looking for something new and different when Bush ran against her. The truth is also that Richard's campaign did some serious smearing of their own. Neither campaign was unique in that regard in American history. Much less Texas history.

I rather doubt anybody will take the time to do it, but Texas politics is "colorful," and has been forever. My favorite source of great stories is the Texas Railroad Commission. Nice, innocuous sounding title, huh?

Texas and America are poorer for her departure.

If it happened in '94, I would guess it's an old story and of course, recorded in cave drawings. Her passing brought it out in the open.

Bush is clever, no doubt. Cleverness does not equal wisdom, frequently it goes in the other direction.

Could be ol Dubya-dubs "intelligence" is doing a slo-mo 'wall of bricks falling' on him and his career, such as it is.

Rove has got 'conniving wanker' rubber stamped in 46 point letters on his forehead. The thought that Bush got his start in his powerful position in part from the spreading of false, slanderous rumors, first with Richards, later McCain -- two people who I'd choose in a hearbeat over the DUBS for any position -- is just a bit disconcerting.

Oh, this is a great country, all right.

Your argument proves the point: 'Misunderestimation' of Mr G. W. Bush is a hobby with Democrats. Ann Richards was guilty of it when she ran for re-election. She had the race in her pocket to lose (she was pretty popular) and she did. It is far, far easier to blame her loss on a smear campaign than it is to accept the truth: She underestimated the great irritation in the middleclass toward the Democrat policies in the State Legislature that she signed into law. Bush gave those people a voice and they voted for him. Ask people who voted for him in that election, including Democrats (he won due to Democrat support). I never, ever heard any of that slanderous crap from my family in TX, who are STILL, ardent loyal Bush supports (no, I didn't vote for him the 2nd time). I know a man that has known Bush for 35 years in business (my friend, in his 80's, is an engineer) and he just laughs at people who say Bush is dumb. He says he heard it all during his business dealings and that it was bull***** that small people used to say to make themselves feel big.

What is so funny is this: If he is so all-fired dumb, what does it say about the geniuses that he outsmarts and outmaneuvers? Go ahead, tell me about how he's a puppet of big oil or something. This is EXACTLY the argument that Democrats used when trashing Reagan and it gets similar, predictable results.

Question: What did it do for Democrats to spend so much effort reassuring themselves of their own brilliance, vis a vis Reagan?

Answer: Reagan kicked their asses.

Funny, I thought the topic was morality and decency, not intelligence.

Funny, I thought Ann's death would be about Ann Richards.

of selfish, arrogant, not so bright ideologues steering the ship of state, and hence us all, over a cliff.

So bot, you have a friend who knows bush and says he`s a smart guy. I`ve got a good friend, a republican who spent most of his career at the Pentagon and is on a first name basis with most of bush`s team, who would agree wholeheartedly with my above characterization.

George Bush is a complete idiot. He couldn't win an election if his life depended on it. Without Karl Rove, the man is absolutely nothing.

If you want to look at a genius, you only need to look at Karl Rove.

Take away Karl Rove and the results would prove how stupid he really is.

That's right, you guys are sure smarter than either Reagan or Bush, yup. The evidence is all there. All they ever did was get elected to the Presidency. Twice. They sure as heck wouldn't dare show themselves here, that's for sure. Ha!

Sorry, I wasn't aware that intelligence was a prerequisite for becoming President. How foolish of me. For the future, I'll make a note that every Presidential candidate must be a genius.

Getting elected and re-elected does not prove that one is smart at anything other than getting elected, and that's the only skill in which people misunderestimate W. He is second to none when it comes to getting people to vote for him. As for his job performance, however, he has been consistently misoverestimated. He has failed at each of the following jobs - baseball team owner, oil man, National Guard pilot, Governor, and President.

I could never hope to get elected at anything, so I admire W's accomplishments in that area, but that's as far as it goes with that clown.

You're on roll. In a single thread you've now associated the lack of common decency with intelligence, and Bush with Reagan. Got any more?

Gee, I didn't know it was either. I'll just bet there's a point sneaking around in there looking for a way out.
