Saw a SATURN sports car the other day...

I was driving down the street the other day and in front of me was a nice little 2 seater sports car. I noticed the emblem on the trunk and I couldn't believe my eyes. It was a Saturn. I drove slowly by it and I was impressed. It looked pretty nice. Anybody have any comments or opinions on this?

Frank, I had probably the same look on my face. I saw one the other day thinking the same thing. I don't know the specs on the car but it looked sweet. Sometimes looks can be decieving. My sister has been a diehard believer and buyer of Saturns for some time now. Toured the Plant and all that stuff. I always teased her about it. She will probably have one soon.

I saw the Pontiac version at the auto show last year. Its design is so crisp and clean, unlike any Pontiac before, and it was hard to stop looking at it. I hear the convertible top is kinda clunky to operate though, unlike the Miata. So maybe they still have some details to take care of.

It's powered by a 260HP turbocharged 2.2L Ecotec I-4. It's the highest HP/liter production engine that GM has ever built (118.18HP per liter). Even the 7.0L 500HP Corvette only has 71.43HP per liter.

Could you imagine if GM ever figured out how to use something other than a pushrod V8 in the Corvette? With the same engine performance specs as the Saturn Sky, it would have 827.26HP!

I thought the Sky was an Opel or Vauxhall sold in Europe for some time now?

The SKY is an imitation of the Audi TT.

That Saturn Sky is the epitome of overstyled and gaudy if'n you ask me. It doesn't look like they can fit the soft top on there properly either, creases and gaps everywhere. It isn't taht surprising though since its a new production car. I have heard good things about handling though. Despite having 500 lbs on the 06's Miatas they are more stable, thanks to Mazda's marshmellow spring rates and dampers. If you spend $1K on the Mazda it is the superior car. Minus all that horsepower if you are comparing it to the GXP.

What year Miata are you talking about? We had a 97 and that car magnified every bump in the road due to the suspension travel of 3mm but it did handle great.....until the tires got wet..... Agreed, the newer ones are more cushy.

I'm talking about the 06 Miatas. My mom has one and I drive it whenever I get sick of having no power in a 2 ton car (my 300D). They handle really well on the street and you can take right hand 90 degree corners at 30 mph without breaking a sweat. It rides so much better than my 300D it's so very sad. But yeah, take a look at some and you'll see huge wheel gaps between tire and fender, I guess to meet some bumper height requirement (so as not to hurt pedestrians?) they jacked up the car. The engine is great and the 6 speed gearbox is beyond wonderful.

See videos of them round a track though and they bounce and wallow around.

for what it is worth, i like the pontiacs looks better than the sky.

i have not seen a saturn that has anything about it that i like!

a friend of mine had a partial head on collision with a garbage truck in a saturn. the truck took off most of the drivers side of the saturn along with about 1/3 of my friends left arm. he was horribly injured but survived and is doing very well. even plays golf with his right and and a hook. (for a left hand, not referring to his shot).

he raves about the saturn's safety and went out and bought another one as soon as he could drive again.

i always kindof thought if he had been in a benz he would have climbed out and walked home.

The Pontiac looks like they tried to copy a BMW Z, and change it just enough not to get sued.
I thought the Sky good looking....less tame than the rest of the line.

That's funny, I worked on that image! We did the entire introduction campaign for it, it was still a highly secret car at the time. The Sky you see in the picture was a prototype and could not drive more than 30 foot!
