A little amateurish here and there but pretty funny.

Oh hey, we're sacrificing for the war effort by going shopping.

From the San Fran Chronicle Jan. 16, '05 letters section:

Editor -- Those who put ribbon magnets on their cars should ask themselves how they are supporting the troops.

In previous wars, Americans made sacrifices on behalf of the war effort. They bought war bonds, grew victory gardens, collected scrap metal and rubber and rolled bandages. Gasoline and food were rationed. Housewives went to work in munitions factories. Film production was curtailed and sporting events were canceled. Entire industries virtually shut down so that their workers could serve overseas. Young men and women flocked to recruiting stations.

By contrast, the Iraq war has not inconvenienced most Americans to the slightest degree. We are not even paying for the war. Rather, we are passing the enormous cost on to our children, grandchildren and succeeding generations as yet unborn. Astoundingly, some of us have even had our taxes cut.

Meanwhile the families of Army reservists live in poverty. The Veterans Administration goes forward with plans to close hospitals. Reservists are denied health coverage on their return from Iraq.

Frankly, except for those who have family members in harm's way, yellow ribbons on cars seem a rather hollow and self-congratulatory gesture.

LEONARD WHITNEY

MedMech: got a response to that?? Please note, putting your fingers in your ears and singing "la-la-la-la-la-la-I can't hear you" doesn't cut it.

Well, look at it this way. Which is easier? To actually do something substantial or just have a tag that says "I care about (insert cause here)." Does it suck that vets are getting shafted? You bet. They gave a big part of their lives for our country and they should not want for anything (within reason) after their service. However, which is going to sound worse? Cutting vet benifits or other social programs? Can you already hear the cries of "Oh! The Children"? I can. Vets getting the shaft are less attention attracting than children. So, you can see where the money will go to. Personally, if I had to pay a little more in taxes that go to vets and their well being, as long as I wasn't gettin fleaced, I wouldn't mind. Welfare, WIC and all that can go to hell for all I care. Vets paid their dues and some. Welfare people probably haven't and probably won't. However, like I said, it is all about attention. If you don't believe it, ask yourself why people donate to these agencies that help foriegn babies in some far off land, etc, etc? Have we solved poverty in USA? Nope. Which is more glamourous?

Good post cmac. I`ve always been astonished at how the ribbon sporting SUV crowd can be so self indulgingly blind to their own complicity in this mess and believe that anyone doing so is a worthless fellow amerikan I`m ashamed to share the road with.

They`ve got ever right in the world to loudly proclaim their complicity and ignorance.

Speaking of ignorance. You should check on a few facts before you take your hand yo knob to type.
